Is Jennifer Lopez The Right Replacement For Ellen DeGeneres On ‘American Idol’?

July 31st, 2010 — 9:00pm

Experts think she could pull it off.By Gil Kaufman

The roster of rumored replacement judges for season 10 of “American Idol” has read like, well, the line-up for one of the show’s traditionally big season finales: Justin Timberlake, Elton John, Bret Michaels, Harry Connick Jr, Chris Isaak and Jessica Simpson.
All of the above have either been debunked or dropped off the radar in the days since their names were first floated, but the one that rose to the top on Thursday, according to multiple reports, might just have what it takes to fill in the Paula Abdul Memorial Chair in the wake of Ellen DeGeneres’ departure: Jennifer Lopez.

Despite some head-scratching upon word that the former fly girl and singer/actress was in final negotiations to join the judge’s panel, Entertainment Weekly senior writer Jessica Shaw said the choice makes some sense. “On the plus side, she was one of the best guest mentors,” Shaw said of Lopez’s stint as a supportive, helpful guide to the season-six cast on Latin night. “And that’s not an easy job because many have not done it so well. I was a bit surprised that she was as good a mentor as she was, but she knew every contestant’s name and is a huge fan of the show.”
You might recall that newly departed judge DeGeneres was also an avowed big fan of “Idol” when she signed on last year to take over the Abdul seat. But Shaw said Lopez has the thing that Ellen, despite her long career in front of cameras and onstage as a comedian, lacked: music-industry experience.
“I don’t think of her as a quintessential music figure, like Elton John, who is an artist with a capital A,” she said of Lopez, who has released six studio albums, starred in more than a dozen movies and, like Abdul, started her career as a professional dancer. “I’m not sure J-Lo is on that level. But, that said, neither was Paula Abdul, yet she was a judge and a force on the show.” While nobody expects Lopez to step up and be the new Simon Cowell — that seat has not yet been filled — Shaw said Lopez could serve as the big, recognizable name that could draw in a new audience. “Everyone knows her. They may or may not like her, but they know the name.”
With so many names in play, Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University and longtime “Idol” watcher, said he was holding out final judgement on Lopez until the choice is officially announced. “I guess she would fill the Paula-diva spot, as opposed to Kara, who didn’t fit in,” he said of season-two judging panel veteran songwriter Kara DioGuardi, who is reportedly on her way out as well. “Part of it is you just have to see them in the chair doing it before you have an idea of if it will work.”
Thompson pointed to the DeGeneres experiment as proof of someone with copious TV talent who never seemed to find her zone on the show. He said the key is finding a panel that has the kind of crackling chemistry sole original judge Randy Jackson, Abdul and Cowell had in their first seven seasons together.
A spokesperson for “Idol” gave a no comment on the casting rumors and spokespeople for DioGuardi and Lopez had not returned requests for comment at press time.
MJ Santilli, webmaster of the “Idol” fansite MJsBigBlog.com, remembers how good Lopez was as a mentor and said the “Jenny From the Block” singer is in a perfect spot to segue to the “Idol” panel.
“She’s kind of on the other side of her career, she’s not the movie star she used to be and her last album didn’t sell well,” she said of Lopez, who has had a rough time at the box office lately and whose most recent album has been lost in the limbo of a label switch. “From that standpoint, she’s a good candidate. And after she did the episode, nobody said she was a diva and the contestants seemed to like her.”
Do you think Jennifer Lopez could make a good “Idol” judge?

Heidi Montag Files For Divorce From Spencer Pratt

July 31st, 2010 — 1:00pm

Heidi Montag has officially filed for divorce from her husband of just one year, Spencer Pratt. Approximately 2 months ago the reality starlet filed for a separation, but today filed the papers to fully end their marriage.
According to Heidi’s lawyer, the process should be swift and amicable:
Heidi has amended her petition for separation and today has filed a petition for dissolution of marriage from Spencer Pratt,” Montag’s lawyer Jodeane Farrell tells PEOPLE. “The couple has agreed they would like their divorce to be finalized in a timely manner in an out of court settlement. Both parties are amicable with each other and over the possibility of finalizing their divorce.”
Does this make you think their breakup is for real? Or are you still skeptical? Do you think Spencer will actually go through the entire divorce proceedings without any drama or crazy antics for attention? We wait with bated breath, right?

Goodie Mob’s Khujo Talks About His Jail Ordeal

July 31st, 2010 — 11:00am

‘I was thinking about Tip, Wayne, Boosie,’ the recently released Atlanta MC tells MTV News of serving erroneous sentence; GM partner Cee-Lo also weighs in.By Shaheem Reid

Khujo Goodie can crack a joke now, but a little over a week ago, his predicament was no laughing matter. The eldest member of legendary rap group the Goodie Mob was in a Henry County, Georgia, jail serving a sentence of five years, where he would have to be incarcerated for around two before he could get out.
“Henry County means ‘Hanging Every N—a Real Young,” Khujo said, his voice dripping with sarcasm, just 24 hours after he was released from prison last Tuesday. “That’s what I found out Henry County stands for.”
Khujo, born Willie Knighton Jr., spent 42 days in jail — 23 hours a day in lockdown — for three counts of being a convicted felon in possession of firearms. He had to walk around on crutches because part of his right leg was amputated after a 2002 car accident. The Atlanta veteran says his arrest and jail time was a major misunderstanding, a result of the correctional system bungling his paperwork.

“I was on probation in 1990, got off in 1993,” Khujo explained. “But Fulton County never put it through in the computer and never let them know I was all good. I had them firearms back when [Goodie Mob] dropped our first album, when we got our first check. You now how us country boys do, we got to have some rifles. So I’m thinking, I must be Gucci, all good. That was 15, 16 years, almost 20 years ago.”
Last summer, Khujo went to sell some of his firearms at a pawn shop and the authorities were alerted.
“The Feds was on me,” Khujo said. “They thought I was a gun-runner. I was like, ‘Why you wanna f— with me?’ They was like, ‘T.I., guns! Soulja Boy, guns!’ And they said, ‘Khujo Goodie [guns!].’ Although Khujo’s gun case wound up not being pursued federally, the Henry County prosecutors stayed active. Khujo was already going back and forth for an unrelated case, and with his probation situation still not cleared up, Khujo was faced with two choices: going to trial on his gun charges and facing 15 years or plea out and be sentenced to five years, with the likelihood of getting out in two.
“I didn’t think it was gonna get cleared up, man,” Khujo said with candor. “I was down at Fulton County trying to get that situation squared away. Once I got it cleared up, I thought I was all Gucci. I thought I was all good. But it turned out they had somebody else’s name on the paperwork and they had the date wrong.
“I knew my court date was coming up,” he added. “I was thinking about Tip, [Lil] Wayne, Boosie, all them boys that went in. I was like ‘these n—as did a year, f— it, man.’ I thought I was gonna do two to the door.”
There is no such thing as a good time to go to jail, but Khujo’s legal woes came at a very inopportune time. Goodie Mob recently released a mixtape and the members were in the midst of recording their reunion album. Khujo also has a book he was planning to release. His group didn’t know his situation was that dire until it was almost too late.
“In all honesty, Khujo is a man’s man and very private and prideful about the ordeal,” his Goodie Mob partner Cee-Lo said. “I remember going through a stint of him going back and forth to court, then him getting there and it being prolonged and postponed for quite a while. Our attitude had become complacent with it. Even on the day they decided to detain him, I’d be talking to him the night before, and [he's] telling me he was going to pick out his jewelry. He drove himself to court. He ended up being detained to everyone’s dismay. So we weren’t even aware of it until that day. He called and said, ‘They got me.’
“That’s our rock, our Iron Man, Khujo named Goodie Mob,” Cee-Lo added, explaining why the group mates were devastated upon learning the news. “That’s big bro to all of us. I’m the baby. We try our best to support each other.”
Not only did Cee-Lo call in his own lawyer, as well as attorney Daniel Kane, who wound up taking the lead, but Outkast’s Big Boi also called in legal counsel, while Big Gipp and T-Mo Goodie and other members of the Dungeon Family rallied for their brother.
“It was very disheartening for it to take place at all,” Cee-Lo described. “But it was a blessing because I saw a miracle take place. It assured me that God had his hands and feet and heart all in this situation.”
Last Tuesday, during a hearing for the case, after both sides presented their case, the judge told the courtroom he wanted to get “creative,” according to Cee-Lo.
“The D.A. did make quite an impressive presentation of his point,” Cee-Lo said. “He spoke very clearly and articulately. I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ That’s when it dawned on me, it didn’t matter about the money; it didn’t matter about anything. If they saw to it that Khujo should remain for the remainder of the sentence, it would have been law.”
What the judge came up with was letting Khujo out of jail, on one condition: The Goodie Mob had to perform for and talk to the youth at sanctioned events.
“They asked were we interested in doing that, [and] I said, ‘We’ll do that today. Just get him outta here.’ You feel me?” Cee-Lo recalled. “It was cool. We came back in, I knew it was success. I felt completely happy and satisfied. The sun was shining so bright. It was overwhelming. My body felt like I was trembling beneath the surface of my skin. I couldn’t calm down.”
“We’re talking about going into the schools, getting drug-awareness programs going. Maybe doing a show for the kids,” Khujo added. “If it’s for the community, believe it or not, that’s what we do.”
Having his brother out was almost too overwhelming for Cee-Lo. “It’ll be commemorated as a modern-day miracle,” Cee-Lo said. “The sun was shining. All of a sudden it got hot. Everybody was there to support, his wife and family. The Mob was there, Big Boi came. It was a pleasure to see him. I know he’s riding ride on a successful solo album. To walk in and just see family was just very … it was calming.”
Khujo said when he was released he went straight to his home. “I got four boys and my wife. I went back to the house, man. They’re about to start school next month.”
Khujo’s case is still not over though. He has to return court on August 3 to be re-sentenced. Henry County District Attorney Tommy K. Ford did not return MTV News’ phone calls requesting comment by press time.
“It was a learning experience,” Khujo said. “I had a chance to get all the trash out of my mind, do some thinking.”

‘Dinner For Schmucks’: The Reviews Are In!

July 31st, 2010 — 7:00am

‘Funnier than you might expect,’ says MTV News’ Kurt Loder.By Eric Ditzian

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in “Dinner for Schmucks”

Photo: Paramount Pictures

After two straight weeks of adrenaline-raising debuts from “Inception” and “Salt,” a trip to the multiplex this weekend might not tax your blood pressure so much as your funny bone, because “Dinner for Schmucks” is now in the mix.
Paul Rudd and Steve Carell’s new comedy will likely not sell enough tickets to prevent “Inception” from winning a third straight weekend at the box office. But these two funnymen — reuniting again after “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” and “Anchorman” — should provide stiff competition for Angelina Jolie’s “Salt.”

Which flick will triumph? It all may depend of word-of-mouth, so MTV News took a look at what the critics are saying about “Schmucks.”
The Story
“Carell plays the schmuck of ‘Schmucks,’ a cheerily moronic walking disaster named Barry, who is befriended by Tim (Paul Rudd), a rising businessman seeking to get ahead with his boss (Bruce Greenwood). As in the 1998 French film ‘The Dinner Game,’ on which the new movie’s based, the boss holds parties where each employee brings a twit; the best twit wins a prize without knowing he’s actually the evening’s biggest joke. The movie pretends to be appalled at the cruelty of this notion, but its heart isn’t in it; these days, mocking the afflicted and the affected is an established source of profits for Hollywood in general and Roach in particular. Barry is Tim’s chosen twit, and within hours of their meeting he has reduced his new friend’s life to itty-bitty pieces of rubble.’ — Ty Burr, Boston Globe
The Performances
“Carell is perfectly in his element as a sweet-natured, well-meaning guy who becomes a tornado of destruction in Tim’s life, and the script comes up with clever ways for him to cause this trouble without meaning to. But there’s a problem, not a huge or fatal one, but something that tempers the intensity of the comedy throughout: Because Tim is not powerful, not rich and not a terrible person, and because he’s played by Paul Rudd, who is about as likable as a beagle puppy, the spectacle of seeing his property destroyed and his relationships damaged is not one we witness with abandoned glee. We laugh. We enjoy it, but without the sadistic giddiness that might have put this one over the top.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
The Directing
“Roach may be the least organic director of comedy currently working in Hollywood. Other directors strive for svelte invisibility, teeing up their setups so imperceptibly that all the actors have to do is roll up and take a clean spike at the ball. Roach is down in the sand pit, furiously digging his way out, passing off the sweaty contrivance of his set pieces as comic zaniness. It’s more like a form of comic epilepsy: He whips up the performances to almost unendurable levels of frenzy and then discards them for someone new, like a bored child riffling through toys.” — Tom Shone, Slate
The Supporting Players
“The success of this movie, following a formula upheld by just about any recent hit comedy you can name, lies as much with supporting players and plot-derailing set pieces as with the central story and characters. Jemaine Clement (of the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords) as a pompous, goatish artist; Zach Galifianakis as an I.R.S. flunky who believes he has the power to control other minds; Lucy Punch as a lovestruck stalker with no control over anything: these are the people who propel the movie on its meandering, offbeat path toward a madly farcical climax followed, inevitably and less happily, by a soft and sentimental dénouement.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times
The Final Word
“‘Dinner for Schmucks’ is as light as a fistful of feathers — as a comedy in the age of Apatow, it’s barely there. But the sharp cast is smart enough not to weigh down the airy tale with heavy shtick (which might have been a temptation), and director Jay Roach lays out the story with straightforward simplicity. The movie becomes funnier than you might expect at the beginning; as summer comedies go, it’s a small surprise.” — Kurt Loder, MTV News

Perez Hilton Says Jessica Simpson, Not Jennifer Lopez, Should Get ‘American Idol’ Judge Gig

July 31st, 2010 — 3:00am

Gossip blogger calls Simpson ‘insightful and funny.’By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Damian Vaca

With Ellen DeGeneres no longer on “American Idol” and the fate of Kara DioGuardi still up in the air, at this point no one knows what the show’s judges’ table will look like next season.
And one gossip blogger thinks the show needs to scuttle confusion quickly.

“So, the question is not who’s gonna replace Simon Cowell, the question now is who’s gonna replace Ellen DeGeneres?” Perez Hilton said to MTV News. “‘American idol’ [is] in quite a predicament.”
Rumors have been swirling that Jennifer Lopez might join the judges’ table for the show’s 10th season, but Perez is making the case for another candidate.
“At least Jessica Simpson could have been insightful and funny,” he explained. “I love J.Lo, but she’s a diva. There’s nothing warm about her, where I think Jessica could bring warmth and insight and humor.”
So, why Simpson? “She’s still been very visible and Jennifer has tried to be visible but she’s kind of been away for a while,” he argued.
“[Simpson] has been around for a long time and has that experience, plus America loves to watch her on television. Does America love watching Jennifer Lopez on TV? I don’t know. I don’t think so.”
Or course, if Idol judges came calling to Perez himself, he wouldn’t turn down the gig. “Obviously I think I’d be great in that role,” he said. “Plus, if they hire Jessica Simpson too, there’d definitely be lots of fireworks between us! She’d be my Paula!”
Would you prefer J.Lo or J-Simp behind the “Idol” judges’ table?

Heidi Klum’s Family Travels

July 30th, 2010 — 11:00pm

Finished up with her stay in the Big Apple, Heidi Klum was spotted leading her brood through the terminal at JFK Airport in New York City on Friday (July 30).
The supermodel mommy looked ever-so-stylish as she walked with Leni, Henry, Johan and baby Lou en route to catch a flight back to the west coast.
Miss Klum had been situated in NYC as she promoted the new season of “Project Runway” – which debuted just last night (July 29).
Talking about the best part of launching a new season, Heidi replied, “Every time I?m intrigued to see how the designers are. We never really know what they?re made out of when we do the casting. The people come in, and they bring their clothes. But have they really made those clothes? Did someone help them with this? How long did they spend on the garment they?re showing? It shows pretty much in the first two episodes who has a lot of talent and who kind of slid into this thing.”
As for the biggest change between Season 7 and Season 8, she dished, “We have 30 more minutes now. It?s going to be 90 minutes. So if, say, one of the designers has a fight with someone, that will be taking more space up in the show. Or if someone has trouble sewing something, we will follow that story. ? When we?re sitting and doing our chats in the director?s chairs without the designers, sometimes it is so intense, we might show more of that than usual. So it?s really going to be the same as what people already know, just more of it.”

Ellen DeGeneres On ‘American Idol’: A Look Back

July 30th, 2010 — 9:00pm

Comedian was right when she said judging role wasn’t ‘right fit.’By Eric Ditzian

Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell

Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage

In the end, Ellen DeGeneres’ run behind the “American Idol” judges table lasted just ten months. After signing onto the reality competition last September and delivering an underwhelming debut during the show’s ninth season, the comedian announced Thursday that she’s parting ways with the show.

After saying the show wasn’t the “right fit” for her, she added, “I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings,” she announced in a statement on her website.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Ellen’s exit is that neither she nor “Idol” producers realized, until recently, that it was never the right fit. A woman who’s made a career out of being nice to people simply was out of place on a show dedicated to critiquing people, often harshly and without mercy. Last fall, though, all involved had a rather different perspective on matters.
“Getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote,” DeGeneres said a month after Paula Abdul abruptly left the show.
Fox reality-TV chief Mike Darnell had actually approached DeGeneres’ reps
with the idea, even though producers also entertained the notion of returning to a three-judge format (as had been the case before Kara DioGuardi came aboard in season eight). Ellen was reportedly ecstatic about joining “Idol,” and a deal was quickly hashed out.
Yet before she could even make her debut, Simon Cowell announced he was leaving the show he helped make a pop culture institution. A sense of impending and unwelcome change — and, some might say, doom — enveloped the program as Ellen made her debut. And it really was quite a debut: She was funny but still took the job seriously and was adept at sprinkling her criticism with I-want-you-to-succeed compassion. “You’re hiding inside and just scared to death,” she told one contestant. “You gotta let go of that, because those nerves are gonna kill you.”
We started to wonder if in fact Ellen was what the “Idol” family needed all along. Things changed, however, once the live shows began
in late February. She was nervous and struggled to compress her comments into TV-friendly bites, which was strange considering all her on-camera experience. If we hoped Ellen would provide some competition to Simon’s must-hear commentary, we were most certainly wrong.
As the show pushed forward, Ellen didn’t seem to improve much. Far too many of her comments began with, “I agree with …,” rather than original insight. She seemed almost apologetic as she foisted criticism on contestants clearly on the skids. All too often she’d pop off a joke rather than delivering an enlightening take on a performance. By the final rounds, it really did seem as if Ellen, much like Simon, had mentally checked-out of her judging duties.
And so it comes as no great shock that Ellen has decided to call it quits after just one season. Her talents are far better suited for talk-show work than reality-competition evisceration. Ellen made the right call, and she did so with class and wit. As she tweeted Thursday night, “Dim the lights … I’ve voted myself off ‘American Idol.’ ”
What do you think of Ellen DeGeneres leaving “American Idol,” and who do you think would be a good replacement for her and Simon Cowell? Sound off in the comments below!

‘Jersey Shore’ Season-Two Premiere: Angelina And Roomies Reunite In Miami

July 30th, 2010 — 5:00pm

As season two begins, tensions run high between exes Ronnie and Sammi.By Amy Wilkinson

Angelina and The Situation in Thursday’s episode of “Jersey Shore”

Photo: MTV

Grab those pickles from the fridge and practice your creepin’ because the cast of “Jersey Shore” is back. On Thursday night’s season-two premiere, the gang traded their beloved Seaside Heights share for digs in Miami’s hot, hot South Beach, proving you can take the juiceheads out of Jersey, but you can’t take the Jersey out of the juiceheads.

With “Snowmageddon 2010″ ravaging the Northeast, the “Jersey Shore” cast readied for their trips to the warmer climes of South Florida. A fortuitous trip, actually, because “you can’t creep in this weather,” as Pauly D informed us on his way to pick up Mike “The Situation.” The two besties decided they’d road-trip down to the Sunshine State. Snooki and JWoww had the same idea, but not before Snooki could put the finishing touches on her look — an extra layer of self tanner.
“I don’t go tanning-tanning anymore,” Snooki explained. “Because Obama put a 10 percent tax on tanning.”
Pauly D and Mike’s plan was to make it to the house first so they could have their pick of rooms, and as they wended their way south, conversation turned to Angelina, who left the house last season after the third episode. She’s been talking to Mike and Pauly D, and the two weren’t sure whether she’d make an appearance in Miami. Oh, and Pauly D let it slip that the two hooked up.
Unbeknownst to her former roommates, Angelina was indeed planning a trip to Florida. How do we know? She’s getting a Brazilian wax, of course!
“I’m happy I got a second shot,” she said, “because everyone in the world deserves a second shot.”
Somewhere in South Carolina, Pauly D and Mike decided to buy fireworks. But then their car got stuck in the muddy field and they had to call AAA. So what are two guys with a trunk full of fireworks to do while waiting for a tow in the middle of the night? Set off the fireworks, naturally. When AAA finally arrived, wouldn’t you know, they got stuck too. Finally, a second AAA truck came to pull both vehicles out of the mud, and the boys were back on the road, albeit having sullied their pristine sneaks.
Meanwhile, the girls were having their own bonding time in Savannah, Georgia, where Snooki had what she dubbed a “life-changing experience.” “This takes pickles to a whole ‘nother level,” she purred, as she and JWoww chowed down on a batch of friend pickles.
Vinny’s goal for Miami was arguably more lofty than a simple epicurean awakening. He plans on getting with 60 girls in 60 days. And if a day goes by without one, well, he’ll just double up the next. You’ve gotta love his chutzpah.
Having broken up after the first season of “Jersey Shore,” Ronnie and Sammi were both apprehensive about living with one another in Miami. While Ronnie’s friends warned him not to get into the same mess he got into last summer, Sammi clearly still had feelings for Ronnie. “I’m nervous about seeing Ron,” she said. “I feel like I’m still in love with him.”
As planned, Mike and Pauly arrived to the house first to claim their rooms. They weren’t there long, though, before Angelina sauntered in. With bewildered looks and gaping mouths, the boys welcomed her with hugs. “I thought I saw a ghost,” Pauly joked. Angelina then promptly plunked her stuff down in the boys’ room declaring she was bunking with them.
It was obvious no love was lost between Sammi and Angelina as the two shared a cool reception when Sammi arrived. Angelina asked if they were OK, but Sammi just couldn’t shake the rumors that Angelina had been talking about her behind her back. Angelina got an even icier welcome from Snooki and JWoww when they finally walked in (after an apparent wardrobe change). Surprisingly, Ronnie and Sammi shared a warmer welcome, a cordial hug and kiss on the cheek.
With the gang all assembled, the boys made short order of firing up the hot tub while the girls finished unpacking. In an unfortunate shelving accident, drinks fell all over Sammi’s white pants, allowing Snooki to deliver one of her best lines from the episode. As she stood over the sink scrubbing Sammi’s stained shorts she exclaimed, “I feel like a pilgrim from the freakin’ ’20s right now.” We bet you do, Snooki.
Hours later, the gang finally did what they came to do: hit the clubs and get their creep on. The girls and boys took separate cabs, and while the guys’ ride was peachy keen, the girls got off to a rough start when Angelina tried to interject herself into Snooki, Sammi and JWoww’s conversation. Having none of it, JWoww challenged her to a fight then and there, but it didn’t happen.
Ronnie and Sammi got into a heated argument at the club, which sent Ronnie into a downward spiral of booze and not-so-cute girls.
“Ronnie is at the club hooking up with grenades (that’s a fat ugly chick) and landmines (that’s a skinny ugly chick),” Mike explained. “His name is Ronnie but you might as well call him Sloppy Joe.”
Meanwhile, poor Sammi was at home wondering if she’d made a mistake in coming. Snooki assured her that she hadn’t. “It’s like a fairytale ends,” Sammi lamented in the confessional as Ronnie sucked face with two girls simultaneously. Fairytale, indeed.

Song You Need To Know: Usher, ‘Hot Toddy,’ Featuring Jay-Z And Ester Dean

The discourse surrounding beverages has always been a constant in hip-hop and R&B. 20 years ago, Snoop and Dre turned the 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor into a rap accessory.
But as the years have gone on and on, hip-hop and R&B have turned their backs on the bargain basement beverages and moved into more refined [...]Missy Peregrym

‘Hills’ Star Says She ‘Could Fit In’ With ‘Jersey Shore’ Cast

July 30th, 2010 — 1:00pm

‘I really like big hair also!’ superfan Stephanie Pratt says of ‘Shore,’ which premieres second season tonight.By Jocelyn Vena

It was only earlier this month that the world bid a fond farewell to “The Hills.” But before the cast rode off into reality-TV history, they passed on some advice to the “Jersey Shore” cast, who are set to kick off their second season Thursday night (July 29). And like her co-stars, “Hills” gal Stephanie Pratt was such a fan she told us she’d love to “fit in” with the “Shore” gang. So MTV News decided to make it happen, giving her and rest of the West Coast crew a Jerseyfication.

When we caught up with Pratt recently, she gushed, “We met them! Lo and I met them at the MTV Movie Awards and Pauly D was definitely the nicest. [Snooki's] little too. She’s really tiny!
“I used to watch it at Lo’s house,” Pratt revealed of her “JS” viewing habits. “I would go over to Lo’s and if nothing was on, we’d go over to the TiVo, so I saw most of the episodes at her house and I really enjoyed it.”
For Pratt, the show was an education in the ways of East Coasters. “I’m such a West Coast person, I didn’t even know what lacrosse was,” she said. “I’m just so clueless about the East Coast so Jersey’s just like a whole other world to me.”
So what were her biggest lessons?
“I realized there’s no place like Jersey and they love long nails, fake tans and the gym and teasing their hair. I feel like I could do it,” she added. “I really like big hair also! I think I could fit in there for a couple days!”
Do you think Stephanie would fit in with the “Jersey Shore” crew? Tell us in the comments!
Season two of “Jersey Shore” premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

Ellen DeGeneres ‘Knew ‘American Idol’ Was Not The Right Fit,’ Perez Hilton Says

July 30th, 2010 — 5:18am

‘She wisely extricated herself from the show,’ celebrity blogger tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena

Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson

Barely an hour after news broke that Ellen DeGeneres will be leaving “American Idol”, after just one season at the judges’ table, someone who has long been saying he’d be a great judge on the show — Perez Hilton — shared his thoughts on the matter with MTV News.
“Ellen DeGeneres is a very funny lady and also extremely smart. She knew — and the audience knew #8212; that ‘Idol’ was not the right fit for her, so she wisely extricated herself from the show,” Hilton told MTV News in an e-mail. “Idol is in an extremely precarious situation right now, with viewer excitement at incredibly low levels and a judges panel that is missing Simon Cowell and someone to get people talking.”
Hilton has never been shy to voice his opinion in the past on his blog and in the media and he added that it wouldn’t change if he were asked to join the show, even suggesting that Jessica Simpson, who has been rumored to join the show as a judge, would work perfectly with him.
“Obviously I think I’d be great in that role,” he said. “Plus, if they hire Jessica Simpson too, there’d definitely be lots of fireworks between us! She’d be my Paula!”
Hilton’s comments echoed DeGeneres’ statement posted on her website late Thursday (July 27). In which DeGeneres revealed that she broke the news to “Idol” producers months ago, writing “this didn’t feel like the right fit for me.”
Would you like Jessica to play Paula to Perez’s Simon on “American Idol”? Tell us in the comments!

‘Sit back and relax! You guys can see how to party!’ the Situation says about new season in Miami premiering Thursday.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Garth Bardsley

The cast of “Jersey Shore”

Photo: MTV

The “Jersey Shore” cast got America fist-pumping last year when they launched their hit reality-TV series with more than a few drunken nights, brawls and hookups. But in season two, which kicks off Thursday, the castmembers tell MTV News they plan to beat dat beat even harder this time around — if that’s even possible.

Their celebrity fans certainly want more fights and hot-tub sessions this season, and the “Shore” cast promises that in Miami that will definitely be the case.
“I am excited for people to see season two. It is 1,000 times more dramatic and just, overall, 1,000 times better than ‘Jersey Shore’ 1,” an enthusiastic JWoww told MTV News. “More drama, make-ups, breakups, fights, and everyone became really close as a family, so it’s just insane.”
DJ Pauly D added, “If you like season one, you’ll love season two.”
The Situation offered his theory on why fans will fully embrace their antics this time around.
“You’ve seen season one, you know what happens there!” he said. “Season two is so much drama. There’s so much more hookups, make-ups, breakups, the whole nine, and you guys are definitely going to love season two. Sit back and relax! You guys can see how to party!”
Sammi “Sweetheart” set the bar high for the revelry of season two. “Of course, ‘Jersey Shore’ wouldn’t be ‘Jersey Shore’ without the drama, the fights and the hookups,” she teased. “So there’s that, plus more!”
What are you looking forward to most from the new season of “Jersey Shore”? Tell us in the comments!
Season two of “Jersey Shore” premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there!

Leonardo DiCaprio Pulls Out of Mel Gibson Viking Movie

July 29th, 2010 — 7:00pm

‘Not a chance,’ a source close to DiCaprio reportedly says. By Gil Kaufman

As the controversy over Mel Gibson’s rage-fueled rant tapes and domestic violence probe continue to unfold, the site that has leaked those shocking recordings, RadarOnline.com reported that one of the “Lethal Weapon” actor’s upcoming projects has lost its leading man.
“Inception” star Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly withdrawn from a planned movie chronicling the exploits of Viking warriors that Gibson was slated to direct. “Not a chance,” said an unnamed source close to DiCaprio.
The site claimed that the latest setback to Gibson’s once-blockbuster Hollywood career — he was dropped by his longtime talent agency in the wake of the tape scandal — is another signal that the actor/director may have difficulty bouncing back from his latest scandal and regain his once high-flying star status.
The Viking film would have been DiCaprio’s first project with Gibson, but the unnamed source said that the meticulous actor — who has avoided a major public scandal during his nearly 20-year long career in movies — did not want to risk his reputation by being associated with Gibson.
“Leo has earned the right to pick and choose who he works with, and Mel Gibson is not one of them,” the source reportedly said. A spokesperson for DiCaprio could not be reached for comment at press time. The untitled Viking movie was being co-produced by Gibson’s Icon Productions and was slated to begin shooting in the fall.
DiCaprio recently spoke to MTV News about his desire to make a Viking epic with Gibson saying, “I’ve always wanted to do Viking Story. I’m a big history buff and I don’t think there’s been a really fantastic Viking film ever made. Those were some of the most barbaric people ever in history. I’d love to see Mel Gibson’s version of that. Certainly with ‘Apocalypto’ and some of the other films he’s made he’s been able to transport me back in time unlike very many filmmakers have been able to … I’d love to see what he does with that subject matter.”
In addition to the embarrassment over the racist, sexist and violent language on the tapes, Gibson is being investigated for alleged domestic violence and child endangerment over claims that he struck ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva while she was holding the couple’s then two-month old baby. Detectives from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department are also looking into claims that Grigorieva attempted to extort money from Gibson by threatening to release the tapes.
Gibson’s spokesperson could not be reached for comment on the DiCaprio news; the spokesperson also has not denied that the breathless, rage-fueled voice on the tapes is Gibson.
The meltdown of Gibson’s personal life has had a major impact on his public one as well, putting his upcoming projects into limbo. Among the movies currently in a holding pattern is the Jodie Foster-directed “The Beaver,” a $20 million PG-13 dramedy in which Gibson plays a depressed CEO who can only communicate with his family through a beaver hand puppet. According to E! Online, the film just recently got a rating from the MPAA, but the studio behind it has not yet decided on a release date.
Also unknown is the fate of “How I Spent My Summer Vacation,” which his still in production and features Gibson portraying a career criminal who survives in a Mexican prison thanks to the help of a young boy. Gibson is credited as the script author and producer on “Summer,” which reportedly began filming in April, but has not gotten a release date yet.
Do you think Gibson’s career can survive this scandal? Would you go see a new movie from Mel? Leave your comments below.

Jessica Simpson Rumored To Replace Simon Cowell As ‘American Idol’ Judge

July 29th, 2010 — 5:00pm

Singer and reality TV veteran reportedly has had several meetings with ‘Idol’ execs.By Gil Kaufman

Today’s “American Idol” rumor about the potential replacement for Simon Cowell has reality TV veteran and pop singer Jessica Simpson possibly stepping in to replace the cantankerous British judge who split after season nine.
According to Entertainment Weekly, an unnamed source close to the “Newlyweds” star said Simpson has had several meetings with “Idol” brass about possibly joining the show for the upcoming tenth season, which kicks off in January 2011. A representative for Simpson told MTV News she had no comment on the report.
“I’m not sure whether her people approached ‘Idol,’ or if it was the other way around,” according to the source, who noted that the “Dukes of Hazzard” star is just one of “dozens” of candidates who have reportedly been considered for the gig. Simpson joins a list that does not, however, include Elton John or Justin Timberlake, who were rumored to be in contention for the slot before their reps denied that either would be considering the spot on America’s #1 show. Meetings between “Idol” producers and John and Timberlake reportedly took place several months ago and were non-starters.
The spate of rumors comes on the heels of reports that former “Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe is expected to return to the show for the upcoming season and that the “So You Think You Can Dance” judge/producer might be considering major changes to the remaining judging panel to give the show a boost. An “Idol” spokesperson has offered no comments on the Lythgoe, Timberlake and John rumors and could not be reached for reaction to the Simpson news at press time. Fox had no comment on the Simpson rumors, either.
The show’s producers have not announced when they would reveal the name of Cowell’s replacement, but the unnamed source told EW that “Idol” network Fox’s “dream scenario” would be to make a big announcement at its event at the 2010 Television Critics Association Press Tour on Monday (August 2). Among the other names reportedly in contention for the gig are singers Chris Isaak and Harry Connick Jr.
Do you think Jessica Simpson would make a good “Idol” judge? Leave your comments below.

Kendall Jenner on Controversial Bikini Shoot: It’s All Good!

July 29th, 2010 — 9:00am

As much as it pains us, we must give Kendall Jenner some credit. The 14-year old half-sister of Khloe, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian responded this week to the controversy surrounding her recent photo shoot. Instead of getting on some high horse and telling the world to focus on more important issues (we’re looking at you, Miley Cyrus), Kendall came across as mature and understanding of the situation. “I am excited to be working as a model, doing what I love to do,” she told People. “My entire family was very supportive, though my dad was a bit concerned at first, he knows that I am responsible enough that I wouldn’t do anything I wasn’t ready to do, or didn’t want to do.” Kendall continued: “Going into this shoot, it was never my intention to be provocative or too racy. It was a beach shoot, and I was wearing beachwear. I am happy with my age, and am not trying to rush into anything too soon. I look forward to all the milestones my teens have to offer – Sweet 16, turning 18, and so on.” We still believe Jenner should wait a few years before donning so few items of clothing in a nationally-published shoot. But at least she recognizes the reasons behind the scandal and acknowledges that she’s barely even a teenager. Gotta give her – or the publicist behind this statement, really – props for handling the situation in such a straightforward manner.Gabrielle Union

Mel Gibson Voicemails Leaked: Eight New Rants!

July 29th, 2010 — 12:00am

Just when you think there can’t possibly be any more Mel Gibson rants, he apparently left a bunch of voicemails for Oksana Grigorieva as well. The contents are pretty much consistent with his previous tirades, which were all conversations with his ex-girlfriend that she secretly recorded. These ones? All Mel. The phone calls were made, along with the previously-released tapes, on February 18, when their relationship ended, spilling over into the next day. The couple shares an eight-month-old daughter, Lucia, and are currently at war over custody of the little girl – and over whether he abused Oksana. Mel Gibson is still under investigation for assaulting Oksana Grigorieva and Lucia on January 6. Police are also investigating Oksana for extorting Mel. We’ll get to the audio shortly, but here are some excerpts: February 18, 10:27 p.m.: “Arghhh. Arghhhhhh. Arghhhhh. Argh. Argh. I called.” February 19, 12:04 a.m.: “If you want to call me back, I think we should discuss the terms of separation, don’t you? Don’t you think? Yes? Yes, let’s do it. I won’t smoke either, just to f*%k with you. I want to really badly.” February 19, 2.29 a.m.: “Whore. Answer the f*%king phone. F*%king bitch.” February 19, 2:31 a.m. (in reference to a ceremony in which Lucia’s placenta was buried in the ground with a tree): “You were a sour faced bitch today. Do you think it was tricky to get that f*%king tree in the hole, the placenta and organize that $h!t?” “Do you know how much f*%king time and money went into that? Did you thank me? Did you even have a f*%king smile on your face? F*%k no … Everything about you stinks and I am seeing it real, loud and clear. F*%k yeah. F*%k yeah!” February 19, 3:06 a.m.: “You are f*%king disloyal and f*%king weak. You’re f*%king blind. F*%king thankless. Such a f*%king slut. F*%k you. F*%k you. Don’t ever sleep again. Don’t sleep as long as I don’t sleep. Don’t sleep. F*%king get sick.” “You f*%king ordinary c**t. You are just f*%king ordinary. That goes for the talent too – it’s ordinary. It’s pretty f*%king common. I’d like to see you play a concert sometime. You make mistakes all over with live performances. You can’t do it.” That’s cleaned up, too. Follow the jump to listen to Mel Gibson’s voicemails, which are extremely vulgar even by his lofty standards … Mel Gibson Voicemails Oh. Dear. Wow. Well, whose side are you on? Whitney Able

Rachel Uchitel on Celebrity Rehab: I Quit!

July 28th, 2010 — 6:00pm

Declaring “I quit” and running away from the set, Rachel Uchitel apparently couldn’t handle the intense pressure of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew. Instead, Tiger Woods’ mistress checked into a swanky hotel. “After a very intense day of filming, Rachel couldn’t handle being at the Pasadena Recovery Center” and left, according to a Radar Online source. Rache fled for Beverly Hills’ L’Ermitage Hotel after an intense day with Dr. Drew, during which she “had trouble coping with the issues” discussed. We reported in recent weeks that Uchitel is being treated for “emotional issues” (i.e. banging married celebrities) as well as an addiction to pills. She was discussing her issues with self-esteem and self-worth, along with her addiction to Ambien when absolutely lost it and bolted the set. Rachel Uchitel flaked on Celebrity Rehab 4 … but will she be back? Producers located Uchitel the next morning. “Producers arrived at the hotel the following morning, and calm prevailed,” says an inside source. “Rachel simply needed some time away from the intense pressure and scrutiny she is dealing with. She agreed to go back to Celebrity Rehab.” “Rachel has never had to face these kind of issues like this before, and talking about it pushed her over the edge, and her instinct was to run.” Well, sure. Of course, Rachel isn’t legally allowed to talk about her affair with Tiger Woods, but the world’s #1 golfer looms large in her life. “Her issues go beyond Tiger, but he was the catalyst that pushed her over the edge,” a close source said of the 35-year-old “VIP hostess.” No word if she’ll talk about David Boreanaz.Kristanna Loken
