‘Buried’ Preview: Moviegoers Get Trapped In A Box With Ryan Reynolds

August 31st, 2010 — 7:00pm

‘This is not a film to be seen but a film to be experienced,’ director Rodrigo Cortés says.By Adam Rosenberg

You open your eyes and are greeted by nothing but darkness. Fumbling around blindly, you can tell that you’re in tight quarters but there’s no obvious way out. Discovering a butane lighter in your pocket, you flick it on and discover the grim truth of your situation: You are completely sealed inside a plywood box with no aid of any kind beyond what’s in your pockets.
This is the ride you take for 94 minutes with yan Reynolds, who plays kidnapped, Iraq-stationed civilian contractor Paul Conroy in director Rodrigo Cortés’ sophomore feature “Buried.” MTV spoke with Cortes as part of our ongoing Fall Movie Preview week — the Sundance-spawned thriller will be released by Lionsgate on October 8 — and he admits that the challenges Chris Sparling’s script presented are what originally got him interested in the project.

“I was sent this script that many people loved but everybody thought it was impossible to make a movie with. But I felt exactly the opposite,” he explained. “I saw the possibility of doing something that had never been done. I love to go against common sense, and everything in this project has been done against common sense. This is the kind of movie that shouldn’t be done, it’s totally nonsense. It’s foolish. It’s impossible to make. And that’s exactly what attracted me.”
Alfred Hitchcock’s influence reverberates loudly through the tiny chamber in which our protagonist is stuck — along with the viewing audience — for the length of the film. The confined setting is essential to the staging of the narrative, in that you don’t ever really know who to trust. Cortes doesn’t shy away from the comparison to the legendary filmmaker either.
“Hitchcock … came to my mind, because I thought of ‘Lifeboat,’ for instance, just one boat with six characters never leaving the boat,” he said. “So those [sorts of] technical challenges, like ‘Rope’ and [giving the illusion of] shooting [an entire movie] in a single take, and ‘Rear Window,’ with respect to [a fixed] point of view.” Cortes is quick to name Hitchcock among his five favorite filmmakers, describing his film as ” ‘North by Northwest’ in a box.”
Even with aspirations to create a tale of Hitchcock-level suspense, it was a tough sell initially. “Nobody could understand [why I wanted to do it],” Cortes said. “Everybody thought it was an experimental, obscure, strange, dark film.”
Sparling’s script is where it all started. The pages didn’t specify it, but Cortes revealed that a lot of the doubters he spoke to believed that in order to make the film accessible to mainstream audiences, both speakers participating in the film’s various phone calls should be shown onscreen. He wasn’t having it.
“In my opinion, that was a perfect way to spoil everything, to ruin an amazing idea,” Cortes said. “Stories don’t have to do with cubic inches, they have to do with [narratives] that evolve or change, you want to know more from them. And that’s exactly what happens.
“I didn’t want to leave it to the point of view of Paul Conroy,” he continued. “I wanted everybody to be inside his shoes. I thought [it was] the key to the whole project. That was the only way of [bringing across] this physical experience. To make everybody feel what being buried for an hour and a half is.”
Asked what he’d like viewers to know going into the movie, Cortes said that, in this case, less is more. “That’s part of the magic of the film: You never know where you are. And every time you trust a character, you find out that you shouldn’t have. At the beginning of the film, you try to trust everybody and at the end of the film you suspect everybody. This is part of the game. This is the roller coaster.
“This is not a film to be seen but a film to be experienced,” he continued. “That’s the way I made it. I didn’t want the film to be seen only with the eyes but also with the muscles and with the bone and with the skin and with the blood. People watch it on the edge of their seats. It’s a physical and sensorial experience.”
From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars.

Song You Need To Know: Kanye West, Featuring Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj And Bon Iver, ‘Monster’

August 31st, 2010 — 3:00pm

There’s something brilliant about the fact that Kanye West is dropping a new song every Friday on Twitter, until Christmas.
Yeah, it’s cool that he’s using a new delivery system (of sorts) for his music. And it’s smart that he’s circumventing bootleggers and leakers by bootlegging and leaking himself. But the real stroke of genius is [...]

Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Her Son On ‘Today’

August 31st, 2010 — 1:00pm

‘Everything works out the way the universe wants it to work out,’ she says in an interview airing Tuesday.By Jocelyn Vena

Sandra Bullock sat down with Matt Lauer for her first television interview since her divorce from Jesse James, airing on the “Today” show on Tuesday. In it, she opens up about her adopted son, Louis, and what he means to the entire Bullock family.
“We don’t have any boys in our family. Boy, is everyone really happy about that. So, he’s like the crown prince. You know, it’s nothing but girls in our family,” Bullock said about her baby, whom she called her “little Cajun cookie,” in an excerpt on the show’s Scoop blog. “I mean, my cousin in Germany has one son. No boys — can you imagine how miserable our father is? I mean, every pet was female. But it was just the hierarchy that needed to be broken.”
Bullock also talked about how she was able to keep the adoption a secret from the media, crediting the people around her as having “massive amounts of integrity.”
“Human beings exist that have integrity, that know how to keep their mouth shut. That know the bigger picture, that don’t sell out their friends,” Bullock explained. “Those people are all over the place. But again, we don’t like to talk about it, because it doesn’t sell a magazine. But I was blessed with the same friends I’ve had since before things got really special for me and blessed in life.
“I did not circumvent,” Bullock explained further about the adoption. “I wanted to do everything exactly the same way everyone else did. And it was. He was always mine, you know. It wasn’t like I felt like someone was going to take him away. But it was nice to have someone say, ‘I think you’re a fit parent.’ … I think everything works out the way the universe wants it to work out.”
The Oscar-winner sat down with Lauer in New Orleans, where she helped to raise funds for a new health clinic on the campus of the Warren Easton Charter High School. “They did it with such power and love and integrity. Integrity. There’s so much integrity here. And I’ve never been around that much integrity,” Bullock said about the victims of Hurricane Katrina since the area in and around New Orleans was devastated by the natural disaster five years ago.
Are you looking forward to hearing what else Sandra will say in her “Today” interview? Let us know in the comments.

Robyn Is ‘Super-Duper Excited’ To Perform At VMAs

August 31st, 2010 — 11:00am

Swedish superstar will perform a ‘never-before-heard mix’ of ‘Dancing on My Own’ with VMA house artist Deadmau5.By James Montgomery

Somewhat lost in last week’s announcement that both Usher and Paramore will be performing at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards was the news of who else would be joining the festivities … and no, we’re not talking about the stars of “The Social Network.”
It’s Robyn, the Swedish superstar who, slowly but surely, has begun her stateside assault with a pair of highly touted pop albums (Body Talk Part 1 and Body Talk Part 2, both released this year, with a third installment due in December), a stirring single and video (“Hang With Me”), and a string of sweat-drenched, sweet-and-salty live shows. And on VMA night, she’ll take another step toward mainstream success when she performs with house artist Deadmau5 during the big show.
She’s just one of the artists who’ll be jamming with Deadmau5 — other confirmed acts include Travie McCoy and Jason Derülo — but she’s certainly the one with the most to prove. After all, to most VMA viewers, she’ll be the wild card, the great unknown. And, as she told MTV News, Robyn is more than honored to be performing … and definitely looking forward to the challenge.
“Deadmau5 is fantastic and I’m super-duper excited to be able to perform for the VMA audience,” she said in an e-mail. “I’m gonna be ‘dancing on my own’!”
That, of course, is a reference to a (really awesome) single from the first Body Talk album — she’ll be performing “a never-before-heard mix” of it at the VMAs — and though you probably aren’t familiar just yet, we’re willing to bet that after Robyn rocks the show, that will change. Quickly.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.

Kid Rock’s Born Free Due November 16

August 31st, 2010 — 5:00am

New album will feature collaborations with T.I., Sheryl Crow and Zac Brown.By Gil Kaufman

Kid Rock

Photo: JulNeil Lupin/ Redferns

There’s no way you’re going to be able to confuse Kid Rock’s upcoming album Born Free with twitch-pop bomb-thrower M.I.A.’s song of the same name.
First of all, Rock’s eighth studio album, due November 16, was produced by legendary knobmeister Rick Rubin. Second, even though Rock, like M.I.A., will release a song called “Born Free” as his first single, the Detroit bad boy’s tune focuses not on world affairs, but on the economic decline of his hometown, Detroit.
A press release announcing the album calls Born Free “transformational,” going on to note that while Rock retains his “edge, wit, and swagger” on the record, he has left his rap-metal roots behind. “There isn’t even a parental warning sticker,” the release says.
Rock described how D-town inspired the Americana feel of some tracks.
“The catalyst for this record was Detroit, and my thoughts on the world through the lens of Detroit,” he said. “Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul.”
Most of the album was recorded during a two-week session in Los Angeles with a band that included Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Los Lobos guitarist/singer David Hidalgo and Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney. The release also noted that Rock logged time in studios in Detroit, Nashville and Atlanta to lay down collaborations with fellow hometown rock icon Bob Seger, former flame Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown and Trace Adkins. T.I. and Martina McBride will appear on a song called “Care.”
The disc is the follow-up to 2007′s slow-burn success Rock N Roll Jesus, which produced the Lynyrd Skynyrd-inspired 2008 hit “All Summer Long.”
Rock provided a preview of the album earlier this month when he performed six of its songs during a series of hometown shows. In addition to the Detroit-boosting anthem “Times Like These,” he pulled the cover back on the Springsteen-like title track, the midtempo “Slow My Roll,” the somber “Rock On,” the 1970s-style rocker “Feels Good to Me” and the Rolling Stones-influenced “God Bless Saturday.”

Mandy Moore’s ‘Tangled’ Heroine Not ‘Typical Disney Princess’

August 30th, 2010 — 9:00pm

‘She’s very independent,’ actress/singer tells MTV News of new Rapunzel.By Kara Warner

Rapunzel (voiced by Many Moore) in “Tangled”

While the fall-to-Thanksgiving film season is usually rife with Oscar bait, it’s also prime time for releasing family films. One such movie is the highly anticipated “Tangled,” Disney’s updated and traditionally animated take on Rapunzel, starring the vocal talents of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.

Kicking off our Fall Movie Preview, we bring you a delightful chat we had with the ever-gracious and lovely Moore, during which she discussed non-typical femmes fatales, singing in front of a 65-piece orchestra and Levi’s powerful pipes.
MTV: How is Rapunzel different from the typical femme-fatale characters?
Mandy Moore: She’s not the typical femme fatale or the typical Disney princess even, because: A) She doesn’t know she’s a princess. I think she sort of has this inkling that something isn’t quite right in her life, [but] she’s just really sort of motivated to find out what else is out there beyond this crazy tower she’s lived in for 18 years. Having said that, she’s very independent, she can take care of herself, and she’s definitely come up with really entertaining ways to keep herself busy.
MTV: Is the Disney take on Rapunzel the same as the original fairy tale?
Moore: Pretty much. She has an overprotective mother who tells her she’s not missing out on anything, and it’s a big bad world out there and it’s too scary and dangerous and she’ll be eaten alive, literally, if she decides to venture out into the world.
MTV: What was your reaction to Disney changing the film’s original title, in an effort to lure in more young boys?
Moore: I think I was initially a bit taken aback, only because people know the story of Rapunzel, so when you say you’re working on “Rapunzel,” it’s sort of a no-brainer, you don’t have to explain it to people. But as the title sort of sunk in, I understood the decision behind changing it. The movie is so great and so cute, and people are going to see the trailer and know what the story is about. I guess you sort of have to leave it up to the brains at the top. They know what they’re doing.
MTV: What can you tell us about this particular story? Can you tease any romance?
Moore: She sort of comes face to face with this stranger who precariously ends up in her tower, and he’s very handsome [and] he knows it. He’s quite the ladies’ man, if you will. Somehow, they get roped into going on this adventure together and start to see a different side of one another, and potentially a romance ensues. There’s [also] a few musical moments.
MTV: What was that experience like, recording with legendary Disney composer Alan Menken?
Moore: That was fun. I’m definitely the quintessential girl who grew up watching “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” and the like, so it was probably one of the coolest things I’ve done thus far, being in the studio with Alan Menken and a 65-piece orchestra. It was such a moment in time. I kept telling myself: “Just be in the moment. Remember this. You’re going to want to think about this for years to come.” It was really magical and sort of everything you’d want a Disney animated experience to be. As one of the players involved, I was like, “Oh my God!” … To watch it all come to life, because so much of your job — you’re looking at storyboards, you’re having things explained to you, but there’s nothing tangible to see or get, it has to form in your imagination, which is one of the slightly taxing parts, but also the most fun — to get to be a kid again and go into the depths of your imagination and play around. This, being there with the orchestra and hearing the score sort of come to life and what the feel of the movie was going to be at different parts was like, “Oh, OK, now I really get what we’re doing.” So that was definitely a moment for me. It was the first time I met Zach [Levi].
MTV: Does Zach actually sing in the film?
Moore: He does, and he’s amazing! Oh my God, we had one rehearsal before we went into the studio, and I was so interested [in him], because they wanted to cast actors in the roles who could also sing, and I had no idea that he sang, and it turns out he’s like a big musical-theater nut and had that in his background. He has a beautiful voice, but he has the perfect voice for something like this. He’s such a sweet guy, and he’s so funny in the movie, but I think his voice will astonish people, like, “Wow, where did that come from?”
From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars.

Kanye West Drops Justin Bieber ‘Runaway Love’ Remix

August 30th, 2010 — 7:00pm

Track channels old-school Wu-Tang Clan, with two new verses from Raekwon.By Jayson Rodriguez

On Kanye West’s re-engineered vision of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love,” which arrived online Monday (August 30), ‘Ye and Raekwon take turns trading Wu-homage rhymes in between the teen’s vocals.
West sampled the Wu-Tang Clan’s 1993 breakout smash “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F— Wit” for the number. In his verse, Kanye pays homage to Raekwon’s standout verse on Jodeci’s “Freek’N You” remix, among other nods to the Staten Island collective. The veteran Wu lyricist also gives a nod to that same verse.
“Yo, ‘Ye, what up,” Rae spits, opening the track like he did on the Jodeci hit. “You got stacks like the International House of Pancakes/ All alone, ready to phone me and your hand shakes/ Palms is wetted, don’s regret/ Never to walk miles for love, I sit in the starter’s deck.”
“Last name West, and my teeth diamonds,” West rapped. “She said, ‘Yo, what’s your occupation: crazy rhyming?’ ”
Bieber’s vocals are the same as on the original. Raekwon anchors the song with two verses, and Kanye has one verse on the track.
Raekwon spoke to MTV News earlier this month and revealed that only he and West joined forces in the studio for the track. The wordsmith made no mention of Bieber among the celebrities who were present during the session at New York’s Electric Lady Studios.
“Kanye was just being Kanye,” Rae said. “He was definitely excited. The energy in the room was already speaking for itself. It was time to get up and have fun on the track together. We was drinking, laughing, being normal cats. At the same time, we had a houseful of celebrities in the house as well. [Kanye] was moving through the facility, checking out the studios he had. He had three studios in there.
“You had Akon in the building. Mos Def was just chillin’. Mos is a good friend of ‘Ye’s,” Rae added. “You had Charlie Wilson, the legendary cat from the Gap Band. Chris Rock walked in. These are guys that really respect who ‘Ye is. ‘Ye’s energy is cool. He’s a normal cat. A normal Chicago/world cat. Very mature. Having a great time.”
The record came together after Kanye West and Justin Bieber talked to each other via Twitter. “Listening to @JustinBieber ‘Run Away love,’ ” West wrote “I love Sunday mornings in the crib.”
Bieber responded and the two traded messages about their mutual admiration.
West then added Raekwon in the mix. The producer revealed that the Wu-Tang Clan star performed on one of his favorite remixes of all time, Jodeci’s “Freek’N You” redux.
“Maybe me and Rae should hop on Runaway Love! FLEX would drop bombs,” West wrote on Twitter, referring to Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex’s method for showing his approval of records.

Emmys Night Belongs To ‘Glee,’ ‘Modern Family’

August 30th, 2010 — 1:00pm

Host Jimmy Fallon adds slushees and Twitter to the awards-show mix.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Jimmy Fallon onstage at the 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards kicked off not with a bang, but with a splash. Host Jimmy Fallon corralled the cast of the Emmy Award-nominated hit “Glee” for a cold open straight out of McKinley High.
Enlisting stars like Jon Hamm, Tina Fey and Betty White, while dodging an overeager Kate Gosselin, the gang jumped around until Jane Lynch doused Fallon and Fey with a candy-colored slushee, demanding to be added to the song-and-dance number. Then things really got poppin’.
Fallon punched up the Emmys telecast with digital and musical touches similar to those he often uses on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” He didn’t slow-jam any of the categories, but the comedian did strap on an acoustic guitar to introduce sizzle reels recapping the year in television. A few lucky Emmy fans on Twitter got some love when Fallon wove their comments into his intro for presenters like Sofia Vergara, Tina Fey and Jim Parsons. Jim Parsons from “The Big Bang Theory” edged out favored stars like Steve Carell, Tony Shalhoub and Alec Baldwin for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
In addition to new music and technology, new faces dominated the evening, as several Emmy victors took home hardware for the first time. Claire Danes from “Temple Grandin,” Eric Stonestreet from “Modern Family,” “Glee” scene-stealer Lynch, Archie Panjabi from “The Good Wife” and Aaron Paul from “Breaking Bad” all scored their first trophies. “Glee” golden boy Ryan Murphy also snagged his first Emmy for Directing for a Comedy Series for the pilot of the Fox hit.
Although low on nutty, unscripted live-television moments, the telecast delivered send-ups of some of television’s biggest hits. In one clip, the cast of the Outstanding Comedy Series “Modern Family” endures inane suggestions about how to improve the show. Ideas included teaming up with animated potty mouth Stewie from “Family Guy,” shooting the show in 3-D and adding the dreamy George Clooney, who also received the night’s Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, to the mix.
Fallon also kept the tone light with a tribute to shows we lost over the past year. Manning a pink piano and sporting rose-colored glasses, à la Elton John, Fallon revamped the pop icon’s “Candle in the Wind” to honor the canceled “24.” Then, busting out his admirable quick-change skills, the comic donned a cardigan, switched up Boyz II Men’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” and poured out a 40 to commemorate “Law & Order.” Then he sported a black emo getup and mussy hair like Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong for a version of “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” to honor “Lost.”
In a move likely intended to make the whole affair more relatable to viewers who are not television insiders, the show’s announcer, “Daily Show” correspondent John Hodgman, rattled off tidbits about the winners as they took the stage. For instance, Emmy viewers learned that Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series winner Edie Falco’s parents are “constantly making meatballs” because she is of Swedish and Italian descent. Categories honoring professionals behind the scenes were precluded by the nominees’ anecdotal answers to questions like, “What was the weirdest note a network has given you?” or “What did your mom want you to be when you grew up?”
After lamenting the lack of alcohol at the event and insisting no one in attendance is wild enough to do any real damage on the sauce, “The Office” creator Ricky Gervais resolved the issue by offering the audience trays of beer (although, “True Blood” vampire Alexander Skarsgård ribbed Gervais for giving out non-alcoholic brews).
In one of the more heartfelt moments of the evening, George Clooney accepted his Bob Hope Humanitarian Award to a standing ovation and recounted his experiences with the late comedy legend. An acoustic performance by Jewel set the tone for a presentation honoring late Hollywood names such as Gary Coleman, Brittany Murphy, Lena Horne and Dennis Hopper. The eponymous, real-life inspiration for “Temple Grandin” embraced one of the movie’s producers in a bear hug in a refreshingly candid moment when the film won for Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
Conan didn’t get to take the stage for his short-lived but much-ballyhooed “Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” but Jon Hamm and Betty White joked about their “sexual chemistry.” We got to see “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson briefly rock out on the bass, check out Sofia Vergara’s curvy frame in 3-D and witness Fallon put Lady Gaga to shame with all his costume changes. All in all, it was an interesting night.

Usher Opens Up About Marriage To Tameka Foster

August 29th, 2010 — 9:00pm

‘It just was never going to work out 100 percent,’ the singer says. By Mawuse Ziegbe

Usher’s personal life — or public speculation about what has happened behind closed doors — has often figured prominently in the singer’s work. Fans ate up the 2004 Confessions LP, which dropped amid rumors that Usher had stepped out on ex-girlfriend Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. Similarly, the singer had endured whispers about his reportedly rocky marriage to stylist Tameka Foster before his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, debuted at #1 this year.
On the heels of the release of Versus, an extension of Raymond, the R&B crooner opened up about why he wasn’t able to make it work with Foster.
“We’re two different people and we have two different goals,” Usher told People. “It just was never going to work out 100 percent.”
Just like he did with his monster album Confessions, the ATL singer turned the heartbreak into hits.
“My music is about where I am at the time,” Usher explained. “In Raymond v. Raymond, I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and
I was suddenly a single father.”
Continuing his tradition of mining his personal life for inspiration, Usher said that Versus is “about being a dating father.”
Earlier this year, the buzz surrounding his relationship with Foster ramped up when Usher’s track “Papers,” a song about ending a marriage by signing off on divorce documents, hit airwaves. However, Usher told MTV News in March that while the track wasn’t inspired by a real-life situation, it unfortunately became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
“When the song was recorded, I wasn’t divorced,” Usher said. “It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at six in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn’t know how realistic it would become. I didn’t know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that’s like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality.”
What do you think of Usher’s explanation for the end of his marriage to Tameka Foster? Let us know in the comments below!

Minka Kelly Leaves The Hair Salon

August 29th, 2010 — 5:00pm

Minka Kelly was spotted leaving the hair salon yesterday afternoon. Doesn’t her hair look great? (And I’m loving that blouse.) She’s ready for the Emmy parties that I’m sure happened last night and will happen tonight, too :)
I haven’t heard much about her and New York Yankees’ player Derek Jeter lately; maybe they’ve gone their separate ways. They stayed pretty much under-the-radar.
But Minka is staying busy; she has two completed projects, ‘Searching for Sonny’ and ‘The Roommate,’ and one project in development, ‘True Love.’

Drake And Nicki Minaj: A Timeline To Twitter Matrimony

August 29th, 2010 — 3:00pm

A look at the ‘super-close’ Young Money stars’ relationship.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Drake and Nicki Minaj

Photo: MTV News

Drake and Nicki Minaj are two of the biggest MCs reppin’ Young Money and on Friday, the hitmaking rappers made major headlines when they tweeted that they had tied the knot. Even if unions announced on social-networking sites aren’t recognized by law, the duo’s strong bond is undeniable.
Here’s a timeline of Drake and Nicki Minaj’s moments in the spotlight on their road to Twitter matrimony:
»Minaj told Mixtape Daily in August 2009 that she and Drizzy are “super-close.” “Before all of this started, I would tell him, ‘You’re a star.’ And he’d be like, ‘You’re a star.’ And we’d kinda been each other’s biggest fans. To see his dreams come into fruition, it makes me very happy,” she said.
»In fall 2009, Minaj battled criticism for reportedly penning her freestyles beforehand; an issue that Drake also dealt with earlier in the year.
»In March 2010, Drizzy and Minaj joined Young Money boss Lil Wayne onstage at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden. “This means the world to me — to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake,” Minaj said. “It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl.”
»Drake and Minaj appeared together on the May issue of XXL magazine with the caption, “Domination: The Rebirth of Rap Royalty.”
»Drake stuck up for Minaj in June amid her drama with fellow femcee Lil’ Kim and said he “didn’t respect” the Queen Bee’s swipes.
»Drake said that he and the Young Money Barbie have a “playful relationship” when asked about the infamous “Miss Me” lyric in which he spits about wife-ing up Minaj. “That line on the album is just me playing with her. I’ll be playing with her for years until she’s ready to go, and then I’m ready,” he said.
»Drake dropped Thank Me Later on June 15. Nicki Minaj appears on the track “Up All Night.”
» On August 27, the MCs told their Twitter followers that they are married. “Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham and dont stare at her too long. She’s finally mine. :) ,” Drizzy tweets.
What do you think about Nicki Minaj and Drake’s relationship? Do you think they are actually married? If not, do you think they ever will marry? Sound off in the comments below!

Katy Perry’s Splash Bar Performance

August 29th, 2010 — 11:00am

Bringing an end to a long day of promoting, Katy Perry offered up a late night performance at Splash Bar in New York City on Friday (August 27).
Showing off her voluptuous figure in a cute bandage dress with colorful stripes, the 25-year-old entertained the packed nightspot with tunes from her just-released album Teenage Dream.
Aside from focusing on her new musical offerings, Katy has also been busily planning her wedding with fiance Russell Brand – altogether making for an overwhelming workload,
Miss Perry recently told People magazine, “Most people have breakdowns just over weddings, and I’m planning mine and my tour. I really have to learn to breathe and delegate.”
Also dishing on her wedding attire plans – which won’t be over the top – she tells, “I’m definitely not going to get married in latex. When I wear latex onstage, I sweat. I could wring out those dresses- and I don’t want to do that at my wedding.”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Recalls Pop-Culture Love Stories

August 29th, 2010 — 5:00am

Taylor’s flash forward calls up images from ‘The Notebook,’ Guns N’ Roses videos and more. By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift and Toby Hemingway in “Mine”

Photo: Big Machine Records

Taylor Swift’s “Mine” video, directed by Roman White, travels forward in time as it tells a love story from beginning to end. But in its imagery, the clip also goes back in time, referencing some familiar moments in pop culture.
Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You”: When Swift’s character remembers the fights her parents used to have, her memories mirror Clarkson’s attempts to exorcise the demons of her past to find love in her future.

“The Notebook”: Granted, any time fans of chick flicks see two good-looking people very much in love, they think of “The Notebook.” And like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, Swift and her love interest, played by Toby Hemingway, spent some romantic time in a boat.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”: “Mine” plays some head games with its viewers, and fantasy and reality are sometimes hard to distinguish from one another — much like the dreamlike ups and downs of the love affair between Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) in Michel Gondry’s 2004 flick.
“November Rain”: The fact that Taylor’s wedding scene reminds us of that great scene in the Guns N’ Roses video when Stephanie Seymour and Axl Rose emerge from the church is maybe a bit unsettling.
“Love the Way You Lie”: Much like in the recent Eminem and Rihanna video, Taylor and Toby have an epic fight in a kitchen. At least they’re less dysfunctional than Dominic and Megan.
Britney Spears’ Fantasy: Brit’s perfume ad features the same “flash into the future” structure after the pop star in question locks eyes with a would-be suitor.
Taylor Swift videos: Yeah, Swift even references herself in “Mine.” The video’s loose definition of time and space recalls her “Romeo and Juliet”-inspired clip for “Love Story” and her VMA-nominated “Fifteen.” This time, however, Taylor’s growing up, not looking back.
What pop-culture references have you spotted in Taylor Swift’s “Mine”? Talk about it in the comments.

‘The Last Exorcism’: Four Secrets Revealed

August 28th, 2010 — 9:00pm

We find out how the film managed to get a PG-13 rating, what special effects were used and more.By Eric Ditzian

Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism”

Photo: Lionsgate

Aside from “The Crazies,” a little horror flick in which I happened to have a juicy cameo, “The Last Exorcism” might be the most memorable fright fest of the year.

But that’s coming from a person who doesn’t really like horror, at least not when it comes to limb-shredding, blood-gushing terror. I want storytelling creativity in my horror, characters I truly want to see survive, some reason to keep watching other than the dull, dumb pleasure-pain of watching other people suffer. That’s why I’m a “Last Exorcism” fan.
The film follows Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), a disillusioned preacher and exorcist who hired a documentary crew to expose those who purport to exorcize demons from troubled souls. They head to rural Louisiana, where a young girl (Ashley Bell) is said to be possessed, though Cotton hardly believes any of it. You can, however, bet that things soon turn freaky … and that not everyone is going to live to see daylight.
I had a lot of questions about how director Daniel Stamm and his filmmaking team — including producer Eli Roth — pulled everything off, and Stamm, a German newcomer to the Hollywood scene, was happy to oblige in a recent conversation. Here are four “Last Exorcism” secrets revealed.
They Made No Cuts to Get a PG-13 Rating
After taking in a screening last week, I was shocked to realize the film wasn’t rated R. It was just too scary to think otherwise. Yet it’s actually PG-13, owing to a lack of foul language and very few bloody moments. But did Stamm have to cut anything out to get that rating? Turns out, they didn’t have to make any changes.
“We never shot for any particular rating,” Stamm explained. “I shot what I thought was scariest. To me, gore isn’t necessarily scary. It’s all about suspense and eeriness. It’s almost like shaking a bottle of Coke and the pressure builds up, but you keep the lid on it for as long as possible. Once you go into gore, you release that pressure and have to start all over again.
“There wouldn’t be any dirty language, because they’re on a farm of this very religious guy,” he added. ” ‘The Exorcist’ is a brilliant movie, but to me a demon is this timeless entity, and if a demon suddenly says ‘f—,’ that destroys the agelessness. I had no interest in having our demon use dirty language. When we were putting it together in the editing room, we thought this might very well be a PG-13 movie.”
There Is Only One Digital Effect
We live in an age of reliance — some might say over-reliance — on computer-generated special effects. But what’s often sacrificed with CGI is a gritty realness, which is why top-flight directors like Christopher Nolan use practical effects whenever possible, despite the often added expense.
Though he was hardly working with a budget on the scale of “Inception,” Stamm used only one visual effect in “The Last Exorcism”: to ramp up an enormous fire. What’s more, he barely used any special effects: one bloody cut, one bloody cow, one bloody cat, and one thing that will remain secret, lest we spoil the movie’s twisty ending.
For the special effects, Stamm recruited makeup effects guru Gregory Nicotero, who’s worked with nearly everyone in Hollywood, including Quentin Tarantino and Michael Bay.
“[Nicotero] sent the cow from Los Angeles in a huge box,” laughed Stamm. “He had his guy on set with the blood pump, who was all prepared to go full-out gore. It’s so tempting when you have a genius like that who can make anything look spectacular, but you always need to remind yourself to use restraint because that’s not the story you want to tell. Also, you don’t want to get into ‘Exorcist’ territory. We didn’t want to use any gimmicks. Our whole movie is based on the idea of whether she’s possessed or crazy, so we couldn’t have her levitate or have her head spin.”
She Did All Those Bends Herself
You can’t walk into a subway station in New York City without seeing the “Last Exorcism” poster: a black-and-white photo of Bell bending over backwards as the purported demon contorts her body. When this happens in the movie, it’s a shocking and scary moment. Turns out that this scene contained not a single visual effect and that Stamm didn’t even know he’d be able to pull it off until days before they shot it.
“She’s double-jointed,” he said. “I had no idea. I just cast her because she was brilliant. Two days before we shot the actual scene, which was planned completely differently, we were in the hotel lobby and I asked her if there was anything she wanted to try during the exorcism. She got up and said, ‘Why don’t I do this?’ and she bent over backwards in the hotel lobby. I ran back to my room and rewrote the scene and now it’s become the core of the movie.
“I made sure Patrick didn’t see that before the scene,” Stamm continued. “The first time he ever saw it was that first take. A lot of the stuff in the finished scene is from that first take because he just couldn’t believe what he was seeing.”
They Studied Horror Movies to Avoid Imitation
From “The Blair Witch Project” to “Cloverfield,” the faux-documentary movie has been used a ton, as has the exorcism plotline: “The Exorcist,” “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” Stamm and his team were so adamant that they not repeat anything that’d come before that they watched all of these films and excised any points that felt duplicative.
“We made sure we weren’t doing anything in these other movies,” Stamm explained. “And I also gained new understanding of these movies. ‘Blair Witch,’ when I re-watched it, I realized for the first time what a smart film it is, how it’s so tense and smartly built.”
They did, however, make one exception. The townspeople who talk about myth and superstition in “The Last Exorcism” were directly inspired by the townspeople recounting the legend of the Blair Witch.
“We learned a lot from that,” Stamm said.
Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Exorcism.”

Eminem’s Recovery: What Is The Secret Of Its Success?

August 28th, 2010 — 7:01pm

Experts point to radio hits and a starved fanbase as the main factors.By Paul Cantor

Eminem

Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage

Eminem is dominating the charts like it’s 2000 all over again, when his second album, The Marshall Mathers LP, spent eight weeks at the top spot on Billboard’s top 200 and went on to sell 9 million copies in the United States alone. His latest LP, Recovery, isn’t as big of a blockbuster just yet, but in the current music-industry climate, it’s killing.
The album has spent seven non-consecutive weeks at #1, the first hip-hop act to do so since Outkast’s double-LP Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in late 2003/ early 2004. A lot of Eminem’s chart success can be attributed to a very old-school source: radio hits. His first two singles, “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” have been staples on top 40 stations since they dropped.
“Radio still makes hits, and hits make artists relevant outside of their core consumer base,” Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “That’s why you see that aberration in Em’s sales on Recovery vs. Relapse. To a 16-year-old, Eminem was bordering on being their older brother/ sister’s favorite artist, but ‘Love the Way You Lie’ has not only re-excited Em’s existing fans — now mostly in their mid-20s to mid-40s — but reintroduced him to new generation of teenagers for whom Relapse didn’t register.”
New York Times music writer Jon Caramanica for thinks Em’s fanbase has also been starved. In a sense, they’ve been waiting for something worth buying from him. “Eminem has been around for long enough to develop different pockets of fans: total loyalists, casual listeners, people who like only specific songs or sorts of songs,” he explained. “That he’s continuing to sell week after week is reflective of the fact that all of these groups don’t get activated at the same time. There are still people out there who might buy an Eminem album but haven’t, and each week, it seems, a few more do.”
But can Em’s reign at the top continue? “I believe Em has a couple more weeks on top of the charts, even if he gets knocked out of #1 a few times before October 1st,” Vibe Editorial Director Datwon Thomas said. “He has two mega-concerts where he’s headlining a hometown show with Jay-Z in Detroit and then opening for Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium in New York. The amount of media and fan fervor for these events alone will spur people to grab both artists’ albums from their respective catalogs. [And] if Em can build on that momentum and release another smash of a hit from this album, he’ll be OK well into the holiday season.”
Working his album through Christmas seems like it might be an option, if only because his record label, Aftermath/Interscope, appears committed to going the whole 12 rounds with Recovery. “Nowadays, [labels] push [albums] until the first-week sales and then generally abandon ship,” Callahan-Bever said. “With Recovery, it’s clear that Interscope knew they had a record with legs and went out of their way to push it. ‘Love the Way You Lie’ just connects to people in that really special, emotive way that only one or two pop songs a year do, and that is just undeniable.”

When fans check out the video for Taylor Swift’s “Mine,” they will be quick to notice how fetching she looks in a wedding dress. And while she only donned the garment for the clip, directed by Roman White, that scene is what had everyone buzzing long before the video even premiered.
“The video is a story of a relationship,” Swift told CMT in the half-hour special that airs Friday night (August 27) at 8 p.m. ET, before the video’s premiere on MTV, CMT and VH1. “It really tells the story of these two people and the things that they go through and their life together.

“The wedding scene in the video is the thing that’s been talked most about because someone got a picture of it when we were shooting it,” she continued, “but I think you’ll find there’s a lot in the video. That may just be one part of it.”
Swift also excitedly dished on her co-star, Toby Hemingway from the upcoming “Black Swan.”
“I picked him because he’s in one of my favorite movies, ‘Feast of Love,’ ” Swift said.
“In another movie that he was in, he walks onscreen for the first time, and he had a ’13′ on his sweatshirt, and that’s my lucky number,” she revealed. “So it really wasn’t me that cast him. It was my lucky number.”
So far, fans have been eating up the single, causing it to spike to the top of the charts since its leak and subsequent release earlier this month.
“I got on a plane, I landed in Japan, and it was #1 on iTunes. And when I got on the plane, I had no intention of having a single out until two weeks from now,” she said. “It just ended up so wonderful, and I’m really appreciative of the fans for jumping right on it.”
Swift’s fans will have more to be excited about come October, when she releases her album Speak Now.
“I put everything I had into this album for the last two years, so for it to have a great little start, it really makes me happy,” she said. “Making this album has been such a wonderful experience, and I’m really excited to roll out the first single and the first video.”
