Natalie Portman managed to work both an expletive and a “Professional” comment into her speech as she accepted her latest award for “Black Swan.”
“I’ve been working since I was 11 years old, and SAG has taken care of me,” Portman said Sunday (January 30) as she accepted the statue for best female lead at the 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at Shrine Auditorium. The Israeli-born Portman’s first major role was opposite Jean Reno in director Luc Besson’s “The Professional.”

“They made sure that I wasn’t working too long and made sure that I got my education while I was working. I’m so grateful to have this union protecting me every day,” she said.
Portman thanked her castmates, director Darren Aronofsky (“who I love so much”), her ballet trainer and her parents, “who always taught me to work my hardest and never be an a–hole.”
Before exiting the stage, the radiantly pregnant actress gave a shout-out to her fiancé, “Black Swan” choreographer Benjamin Millepied, with a demure smile.
Portman’s win for the psycho-sexual drama follows her victory at the Golden Globes earlier this month. Portman is also nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards, set for February 27.

Britney Spears Is A ‘Tigress’ In ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video, Choreographer Says

January 31st, 2011 — 3:00am

‘I love nudity,’ Brian Friedman teases about Jonas Åkerlund-directed clip.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Sure, details are limited on what the Jonas Åkerlund-directed video for Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” is going to look like, but when Brit’s choreographer, Brian Friedman, sat down with MTV News, he teased some scintillating details about the video.
“I didn’t necessarily have pressure with this — it was more excitement,” he said of working with the pop diva again. “I haven’t been with Britney in five years on a project, so it was excitement to be back with her. It was excitement to get her dancing really hard again ’cause she’s had a couple of years where she’s been dancing different styles of dance and it hasn’t been me.

“It’s not necessarily that she hasn’t been dancing, it hasn’t been what I get from her, and what I seem to get from her is this tigress quality,” he continued. “And she prowls. She really dominates when she does my choreography, and that’s what I wanted to get back. Excited yes, scared no.”
Shot over two days last weekend, the video shows Spears in a look she tweeted from the set. The preview pic, a lo-res photo, shows Spears from the shoulders up, standing with her back to the camera and her face turned toward it. The singer is in a red outfit, surrounded by a wreath of microphones.
While Friedman danced around any specific details about the clip, he did share that the video will have 10 male dancers. He also told us his favorite part: “I love nudity,” he teased.
“I can tell you that Britney is wearing a couple of hats in this video — not literal hats, but she’s playing roles in this video. That is what I can give you,” he explained. “In every role, she is dancing. She is going to be dancing throughout the whole video. Like I said: Dance is the focal point of this video.”
He also teased a bit about the costumes: “She’s taking fashion risks. Things we’ve never seen her wear before she’s wearing in this video, and I think it’s just very sexy and it’s a little bit playful,” he added. “She’s going to be doing something in this video that we’ve never seen her do. I’m not gonna tell you what that is but she’s going to be sweating and she’s going to be getting bruised and battered.”

Chris Brown’s Order To ‘Stay Away’ From Rihanna May Be Reduced

January 30th, 2011 — 5:00pm

Rihanna’s lawyer has to OK judge’s decision at status hearing to scale the mandate back to a ‘do not annoy’ order.By Jayson Rodriguez

The “stay away” order issued against Chris Brown following his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna is expected to be reduced to a “do not annoy” order, it was revealed Friday (January 28) during a status hearing for Brown.
Judge Patricia Schnegg mandated the protective order back in August 2009 after Brown pleaded guilty to assault. The restriction called for the former couple to not communicate and keep their distance should they attend the same industry event.
Last month, Brown completed a yearlong domestic-violence course. Judge Schnegg once again praised Brown for his progress and congratulated him on his course completion.
The singer’s attorney requested that Brown be permitted to skip future status hearings as a result of his completed course work, which the judge granted. Brown still must complete a number of community labor hours.
The “stay away” order being reduced to a “do not annoy” order first needs to be approved by Rihanna’s attorney. When Brown reached his plea deal, Rihanna’s lawyer notified the court that the pop star did not wish to seek a restraining order against her ex.
During a short recess granted by the judge, Brown’s attorney phoned Rihanna’s legal rep to OK the motion, but the party was unavailable.

‘American Idol’ Takes Nashville, Finds Potential Winner In Lauren Alaina

January 30th, 2011 — 11:00am

Teen wows the judges with her strong voice.By Gil Kaufman

Photo: FOX

No pressure, Nashville, but the biggest “American Idol” winner in the show’s history, Carrie Underwood, just happens to live in Music City. That was the not-so-subtle message “Idol” producers opened the show with on Thursday night (January 27) when our new favorite judging trio sat behind their desk in the legendary Ryman Auditorium to see what they could find in the home of country music.

By the time they got up, they felt like they might have found a winner in a 15-year-old country girl with a voice as big as all outdoors.
But things did not get off to a very good start thanks to helium-voiced chicken squawker Christine McCaffrey, a not-quite-there dental assistant from West Palm Beach, Florida, who butchered one of J.Lo’s favorite songs, Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance.” All Randy Jackson could keep saying was, “Really? Really?”
In past seasons, we’ve had twins, best friends, brothers and sisters, but Thursday night’s show brought us our first auditioning exes. Aspiring singers and former couple Rob Bolin and Chelsee Oaks made beautiful music together, singing a flawless duet on the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.”
“You were one voice,” a pleasantly surprised Steven Tyler told them. “Sometimes passion comes from friction, and I saw how much in love you were.” Restaurant worker Bolin, 23, showed off his deliciously raspy Ray LaMontagne-style chops on Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” while waitress Oaks, 23, was equally impressive with a rich run through Brandi Carlile’s “The Story.” Both made it through, so Hollywood Week should be interesting.
Amid the great ones, there were philosophical, Lynyrd Skynyrd-lovin’, thick-as-a-brick tattoo artists, a screechy Chaka Khan killer, a kid in a blue bodysuit and a soulful former Miss Teen USA named Stormi (yes, with an “I”) who got through over Lopez’s objections about her “small” voice.
And then there was 27-year-old Wickliffe, Kentucky, student Adrienne Beasley. Her inspiring story was solid — she was adopted by a white family at age 2 and raised on a farm — but her singing was even better, mixing a hint of R&B grit and country twang on Lady Antebellum’s “American Honey.”
“I hear something so special in your voice, and I can’t put my finger on it right now,” said Tyler, who was close to tears after the performance. The real showstopper, though, was self-proclaimed recording artist and already-a-star Latoya “Younique” Moore, a 26-year-old who made up in sass what she lacked in vocal skills.
Her tone-deaf slaughter of Tamia’s “When I Close My Eyes” was a disaster, and Tyler was kind when he joked it was “definitely unique.” Randy was more blunt, calling it annoying and making a high-pitched buzzing-bee sound while breaking the bad news. But Moore wasn’t done, as she sang her way out the door, hoping for one last chance, thinking perhaps it was just her tempo that was off and not everything else.
A succession of fellas knocked it out later in the day, showing off some ear-licious deep-fried soul and grit that got the judges excited. Matt Dillard’s story was very inspirational, coming from a family that had housed more than 700 special-needs foster children over the past two decades. The brawny, cowboy-hat-wearing 27-year-old unemployed Tennessee good ol’ boy surprised the panel with his low-key cover of Josh Groban’s popera hit “You Raise Me Up.”
Lopez wasn’t swayed, but Tyler agreed with Jackson that it was worth taking a chance on Dillard.
Talk about saving the best for last! The judges were sure they found a potential winner in Rossville, Georgia, spunky 15-year-old Lauren Alaina, who cited her cancer-survivor cousin as the inspiration for her singing. And when she opened her mouth and poured out Faith Hill’s “Like We Never Loved at All,” the air went out of the room as her smoky voice wrapped around the ballad and hit all the high, low and in-between notes like a seasoned pro.
“Best we’ve seen today … I’m blown away,” Randy said. “I think you should cry,” Tyler added as Alaina began to mist up. “Because you’re going to make 40 million people cry tears of joy, baby.”
She put some icing on the cake after she brought in her family and instructed Tyler to duet with her on his “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” her parents’ favorite song.
It’s on to Austin, Texas, next week and two more nights of auditions.

SAG Awards Set Designer Says Show’s Vibe Will Be ‘Elegant’

January 30th, 2011 — 9:00am

Joe Stewart tells MTV News that Sunday night’s festivities will look ‘beautiful.’By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kelly Marino

Joe Stewart

Photo: MTV News

At Sunday night’s SAG Awards, Hollywood’s best and brightest will be lauded by their peers. And it’s up to the show’s production designer, Joe Stewart, to make sure that this year’s winners collect their hardware in a venue that is as spiffy as humanly possible.

Stewart spoke to MTV News on Friday while preparations at the Shrine were well underway, and broke down the glamorous atmosphere of the production.
“This year, what we wanted to do was have a beautiful, elegant environment,” he said. “The vibe of this show is always pretty elegant — because first of all, I mean, you’re at an awards show; the attendees and the recipients are always wearing gowns and tuxedos. It’s a black-tie event, so you always have to have a set that … people can settle into and look good. So this set is supposed to be a sort of swell interior where ladies in gowns can look at home.”
Setting up a venue worthy of a televised, A-list trophy handout takes planning, and Stewart said that putting the look of the event together took months.
“We prepare for this show in advance quite a while. I think that we started working on this in October, maybe even September with the preliminary conceptual ideas to get us going,” he said. “It’s a committee, we all have to get together, find time and meet and sooner or later we come to a consensus and start the work.”
Outfitting the legendary event space with a glitzy look appropriate enough for SAG nominees like Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman to sashay into is no easy task. However, Stewart pointed out that the space not only has to appear super glam, but the room also has to be transformed into a top-tier set able to accommodate a live coast-to-coast broadcast of the ceremony.
“Always, the challenging part of this is the space,” he said. “There’s a transformation that happens in this space. We completely black it out and then rig it, and the rigging you can see above head is how we hang everything up. And we basically take a room that isn’t supposed to be a television studio or a theater and turn it into a glamorous event. But it has to function and have all the whistles and bells that a television studio would have and catering an event.”
After months of planning, Stewart’s job will finally wrap up Sunday when the show airs. While he admitted that handing over his handiwork to the stage managers makes him “pace backstage,” Stewart revealed the special way he gets to indulge in the excitement of the evening.
“I get a little place backstage and I can see and congratulate winners, and I really enjoy doing that,” he smiled. “When they come off the stage it’s fabulous.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Leads New Era Of Outcast Anthems

January 30th, 2011 — 7:00am

Taking cues from Frank Zappa, the Ramones and Nirvana, Gaga carries the torch for the outsider in pop music.By James Montgomery

Lady Gaga

Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images

In the 1970s, when disco was in full swing and rock and roll was posturing its way into arenas, four goony, glue-sniffing kids in Forest Hills, Queens, threw on leather jackets and began bashing out two-minute tunes with titles like “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “Beat on the Brat.” They called themselves the Ramones, and not only were they probably the first punk band on planet Earth, but they were most definitely outcasts, in every sense of the world.

Of course, the Ramones certainly weren’t the first musical outcasts. Theirs is a legacy that reaches all the way back to the dawn of recorded music, from the likes of the Hoosier Hot Shots and Slim Galliard, scatting madman Cab Calloway and the “shocking” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, to midcentury curios like bizarro bandleader Spike Jones, deep-fried ’60s oddballs like Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart and even contemporaries like the Cramps and the Talking Heads. But unlike any who came before them, the Ramones helped usher in an era — and a genre — in which being odd was championed. It would continue through the 1980s, thanks to the Heads, West Coast punk acts like Black Flag and the Minutemen, and college-radio darlings like R.E.M. — and, of course, the eternally outcast world of heavy metal — then truly break through in the ’90s, with the chart-topping success of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins, and the rise of hip-hop outfits like the Wu-Tang Clan, the Pharcyde and the incomparable Kool Keith.
Of course, in the 2000s, things sort of petered out. Rock and hip hop became increasingly lunkheaded and lumbering, and the meek were shoved from the spotlight. And it bears mention that, even during the outcast heyday, for the most part, established acts — i.e., anyone who had plenty to lose — stayed as far removed from the fringe as possible, or if they dared stray outside their lane, they suffered the consequences (the classic example being, of course, Madonna, who nearly submarined her entire career with the simultaneous release of the Erotica album and its accompaniment, the coffee-table book “Sex”). There’s a reason it’s called “popular” music, after all.
These days, however, things appear to be changing. For the first time, established pop megastars are embracing those on the fringes of society — and finding success in the process. It all started, appropriately enough, with the rise of Lady Gaga, who made no bones about the fact that her earliest support came from the gay community, and over the past year, through videos like “Alejandro” and her campaign against “don’t ask, don’t tell,” she has become the outcast icon of our time. Others followed suit — like Pink, who scored hits with underdog anthems like “Raise Your Glass” and “F***** Perfect”; Ke$ha, whose “We R Who We R” went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100; and even Katy Perry, who dedicated her “Firework” video to the “It Gets Better” campaign — and it truly seems that, for the first time since the 1990s, being an outcast was not only acceptable, it was downright mainstream.
Now, Gaga is poised to return with “Born This Way,” the first single from her album of the same name. On Thursday, she released the song’s lyrics, and if it’s not already the biggest outcast anthem of all time, well, then it probably will be very soon. In fact, there’s nary an outsider group Gaga doesn’t mention in the song — gays, bisexuals, transgenders, ethnic minorities, the disabled, the bullied, the poor — which makes it, and its near-inevitable chart success, incredibly noteworthy. After all, here is Lady Gaga, currently the biggest artist on the planet, releasing a song that not only calls for acceptance of all people, but drags those who aim to oppress directly into the center of the ring. It is not only fierce, it’s downright fearless. Gaga has plenty to lose, but she couldn’t care less.
And perhaps “Born This Way” is just the byproduct of the era in which we live, a time when social mores are constantly debated, when boundaries are being expanded and contracted, almost daily, and when it truly seems possible that maybe — just maybe — the outcasts could inherit the earth. After all, Bill Gates was an outcast, Barack Obama was too — and look how things worked out for them. And while this may put the fear of God in some folks, it seems that change is inevitable, and, as it is wont to do, pop music is there to provide the soundtrack to all of that change. Just like in the 1960s, when the biggest rock and folk acts of the day led the charge for social rebellion, so too may Lady Gaga. And she’ll do it on the biggest stage imaginable. Of course, that might just be speculation, but it’s certainly been a long time coming.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Leads New Era Of Outcast Anthems

January 30th, 2011 — 5:00am

Taking cues from Frank Zappa, the Ramones and Nirvana, Gaga carries the torch for the outsider in pop music.By James Montgomery

Nicki Minaj Calls ‘Moment 4 Life’ Video ‘A Celebration Of Royalty’

January 28th, 2011 — 5:00am

Clip premieres tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by a live Q&A session with Nicki!By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Being the creative person Nicki Minaj is — she did, after all, graduate from a performing-arts high school — she usually has an idea of how she wants her songs to be expressed visually. But when it came to her “Moment 4 Life” video, featuring Drake, the Lil Wayne protégé admitted she wasn’t initially sure how the clip should look.

“Usually, with all of my songs, I have a vision of what I want the video to look like,” she told MTV News of the clip, which premieres Thursday (January 27) at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by a live Q&A with Nicki herself. “But with ‘Moment 4 Life,’ I didn’t have a vision for it yet.”
Then, the hip-hop upstart had her “aha!” moment. “All of a sudden, I said, ‘I know what it is,’ ” Nicki recalled. ” … It’s a celebration but a different kind of celebration. It’s almost a celebration of royalty, you know, arriving into a new level and feeling like you’re among kings.”
Certainly, Drake’s inclusion helps things. The other Lil Wayne mentee also had a huge 2010, and together, the pair were able to help make up for the absence of their boss, who spent the majority of the year behind bars.
Weezy’s spirit was present on set, though, even if the Cash Money superstar wasn’t, Drake said.
“The fringes on the bottom, that’s Weezy old hair,” Drake joked of the ornate bed dressing, doing his best Birdman impression. “That’s Weezy’s dreads dyed red, you understand.”
But the Thank Me Later star was supportive of Minaj and her clip. “It’s a fantasy video,” he said. “So you’ve got a very regal environment. You got Nicky doing what she does. Big outfits. Big everything.”
Don’t miss the premiere of Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” video, featuring Drake, tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by a live interview with the Young Money femcee that will continue on MTV.com. If you have questions for Minaj, tweet them with the hashtag #asknicki or upload a video question to Your.MTV.com.

Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Gets Remixed

January 28th, 2011 — 3:00am

DJs and producers have begun putting their spin on Spears’ banging single.By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears

It didn’t take long for the club scene to put their spin on Britney Spears’ single “Hold It Against Me.” In the weeks since the pop star released the hard-pounding dance cut, DJs and producers have begun work on making sure it bangs the club even harder.
A few days ago, house legend Paul Oakenfold revealed on Twitter that he was putting together a “HIAM” remix, tweeting, “I’m in the studio working on Britney Spears remix its going well.” Oakenfold previously remixed Spears’ “Gimme More.”
While fans have yet to hear how Oakenfold plays with “Hold It Against Me,” electropop act Robots With Rayguns already have released their own, space-aged rendition on the tune. Their version combines ’80s-inspired synths, robot noises and sparse beats, while keeping Spears’ vocals at the forefront of the track. It sounds like Kylie Minogue’s version of dance pop, playing up Spears’ sex-kitten image.
DJ Mike Rizzo has offered up his own take on “Hold It Against Me,” subtitled “Funk Generation Club Mix,” and it goes dark where Robots With Rayguns went light. Playing up the song’s already-heavy electro and house groove, this remix sounds like it would be right at home at any given dance party, with its lopped vocals, sirens and thumping beat.
The dance community has been vocal about their support of “Hold It Against Me.”
“The more the stuff that is underground becomes mainstream, the more the underground is gonna change,” Skrillex told MTV News with regard to the Dr. Luke/ Max Martin-produced tune. “I think it’s gonna inspire people to obviously do something different.
“I thought the track was great overall,” he added. “I’ll be honest, man: I love Max Martin. I think he’s an absolute genius. And Dr. Luke did it, right? I think they are a f—ing dream team. I love the track!”
Meanwhile, super-producer David Guetta says he’s all for the track and Spears’ further journey down the dance rabbit hole.
“My favorite part is that dub step break. I think that’s really cool,” he explained to MTV News. “It’s like the beat is really simple and you’re like, ‘OK,’ and then there’s this huge chorus it’s like, ‘OK,’ but then when they come with that dub step break … It gives a totally different approach to the record. I love this. It’s surprising. It’s a big record.”
What do you think of Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” and the remix tracks that you’ve heard? Share your opinion in the comments.
