J.J. Abrams’ film is an antidote to the ‘emotional-vitamin deficiency’ brought on by ‘low-cal’ superhero sequels, one critic writes.

From the Spielbergian nostalgia factor to the first-rate performances of a group of largely unknown young actors to the ultra-satisfying reveal of the monster, we’ve got plenty of reasons you should check out “Super 8″ this weekend.

But we’re not alone in our full-throated support of director J.J. Abrams’ ode to ’70s-era adolescence and alien invasion flicks. Based on a wholly original idea (a true rarity in an era of iconic superheroes, wizards and alien bots) and with no A-list talent in front of the camera, “Super 8″ has nonetheless been nabbing overwhelmingly positive reviews and is expected to earn around $35 million over the weekend.

While some critics have suggested the film’s ultimate mystery remains disappointing when finally revealed, far more have been raving about the flick’s throwback vibe, efficient storytelling, and satisfying emotional and cinematic similarity to movies like “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Read on for a deep dive into “Super 8″ reviews.

The Story
” “Super 8″ centers on Joe (Joel Courtney), a middle-schooler who has lost his mom and is spending his summer helping his chum Charles (Riley Griffiths) make a zombie movie. Shooting surreptitiously one night at a train station, the kids witness a horrific accident that opens a mystery involving a science teacher, an Air Force investigation, Joe’s policeman dad (Kyle Chandler) and … something out there in the night. There are harum-scarum jokes aplenty, lots of Spielbergian camera work, a cute girl to woo (Elle Fanning), and some broken psyches in need of repair. Is it as powerful as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” or “E. T.”? Not quite, no. But it’s spirited and funny and deeply entertaining, a summer movie for kids who think like adults and adults who feel like kids.” — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian

The Performances
“The pacing is superb, quick and agile without being frenzied, and the special effects are jaw-dropping. Abrams gets excellent performances from his young cast, not only from his leads — Elle Fanning, as the pretty girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and Joel Courtney, as a sensitive boy who has lost his mother — but from the supporting players. For example, Riley Griffiths tears ferociously into the role of the boy director, as a kind of eighth-grade Orson Welles. There are also two wounded fathers, well played: Kyle Chandler plays the town’s deputy for all he’s worth, and Ron Eldard, looking like a slimmed-down Gerard Depardieu, plays Fanning’s confused father.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The Comparisons
“There’s a thin line, though, between honoring what came before you and replicating it, and ‘Super 8′ occasionally wobbles over that line into predictability. Nor is Abrams quite sure what to make of his monster. Is it friend or foe? Can a movie split the difference and still hold on to our sympathies? Toward the end, you feel the filmmaking cutting corners, rushing past story points and shortchanging characters to get to the finale, which itself lacks the pop immensity of a movie like ‘Close Encounters’ even as it imitates it. ‘Super 8′ is a curious thing indeed: A good movie that makes you want to go home and re-watch a great one.” — Ty Burr, Boston Globe

The Mystery
“Just what and who the monster is, forms the central question of ‘Super 8.’ But despite Abrams’ best efforts to ratchet up the tension, the mystery never takes compelling hold, a weakness that becomes especially clear in the movie’s anti-climax of an ending. At that point, the already thin story gets wrapped up so neatly that viewers will scarcely have time to process its plot holes. After six years of marriage, pair will throw an anniversary and divorce party in Nashville.

Jack White and his wife, model/singer Karen Elson, have announced their divorce, but it doesn’t seem like there are hard feelings between them. They plan to commemorate the ending of their six-year marriage with a divorce party this weekend, according to People.com.

“Karen Elson and Jack White announce today that they are getting divorced,” a statement about their divorce reads. “We remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow.

“In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party,” the statement continues. “An evening together in Nashville to reaffirm our friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family.”

This is the second split for White this year. Earlier this year, Jack and Meg White officially dissolved the White Stripes. The musical partners had also been previously married to one another. White married Elson (who appeared in the Stripes’ “Blue Orchid” video) in 2005 in Brazil, quickly expanding their family with a son and daughter. They reside in Nashville where the party is expected to take place on Friday night (June 10).

An invitation says that the unusual party will have “dancing, photos, memories and drinks with alcohol in them. … Please help us celebrate together this anniversary of the making and breaking of the sacred union of marriage with our best friends and animals.” So, who made the guest list? The invite adds, “This is only for close personal friends and family. So please no plus ones or dead beats.”

On Sunday morning, a few hours before the 2011 MTV Movie Awards went live and while the red carpet at the Gibson Amphitheatre was still a hive of pre-show activity, we welcomed three “Twilight” experts into the fray with a simple assignment: Take an early look at the “Breaking Dawn” teaser trailer, which we would be debuting during the Movie Awards, and let us know what you think.

They more than came through. Kara Hassell of TwilightersAnonymous.com, Laura Byrne-Cristiano of TwilightLexicon.com and Kallie Matthews from TwilightSeriesTheories.com analyzed the trailer like only die-hard “Twilight” specialists can. But there was too much info to pack into one story. And now that a few days have passed since the trailer’s debut and the bloggers’ opinions are still fresh in our minds, we have a few lingering questions we want answered in the future.

Two Wedding Rings?
Early in the trailer, we see Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan wearing a large diamond-incrusted ring — a family heirloom, as explained in the book. But as Matthews pointed out, when Bella notices she is pregnant in the trailer, she is wearing a simple silver band. What gives? Will the two-ring situation be explained? Matthews thinks she knows the answer already. “I’m thinking it’s one of those things where the one ring really is an heirloom,” she told us. “You put it away and wear it on special occasions.”

Too Hot for PG-13?
Last summer, Summit Entertainment distribution chief Richie Fay assured us that, despite the book’s sex scenes and horror-like elements, the adaptation would not be rated R. That hasn’t stopped online talk, as Byrne-Cristiano put it, that “we’ve got to make this R.” Well, now that we’ve seen the first trailer, it seems regardless of the PG-13 rating, the flick is going to be pretty steamy. Just how hot? Though we’ve gotten a peek — Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen cracking a headboard mid-coitus and the duo taking a honeymoon skinny dip — the real question about the heat factor will have to wait until we glimpse a different scene: the famous one with the feathers. “There are no feathers on the bed,” she noted. “That’s a well-known point that everyone wants. So in that trailer, there are three moments, and there’s got to be another one.”

What Else Has Changed?
The eagle-eyed Hassell noted two small but significant changes from “New Moon” to “Breaking Dawn.” For one, Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays the blond vampire Caius, seems to have a reworked ‘do. “His hair is A-plus!” she said. “A lot better than ‘New Moon.’ ” And Hassell also noted the Volturi’s thrones appear to have gotten a makeover. “It seems like the ones in ‘New Moon’ are more intricate,” she said. “The ones in ‘Breaking Dawn’ are very square and not as ornate.” It’s hard to say what accounts for such changes; the same production designer, for example, worked on both films. But it does raise the question: What else has changed in the world of “Twilight” for these final films?

Will We See The Wedding Dress Before Opening Night?
While the trailer showed us much more than many predicted — a shirtless Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black, Bella quizzically examining her pregnant belly — there was one thing we didn’t catch a glimpse of: Bella’s wedding dress. Might we see the gown in a subsequent trailer? Or will Summit hold that back until the film itself? “I’m hoping beyond hope that we get the wedding dress in the next trailer. I’m not holding my breath. I think we’ll have to wait,” said Hassel, adding, “I hope it’s something classic that fits in with [author] Stephenie Meyer’s vision. But Kristen’s gorgeous. She’ll look great in anything.”

The Peas and Swift took to Twitter to apologize to fans after a star-studded NYC charity show was postponed due to bad weather on Thursday.

The weather just didn’t want to cooperate with the Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and the other artists slated to perform in New York’s Central Park on Thursday night at a concert to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation anti-poverty organization. After a number of delays, and before anyone could take the stage, the Concert 4 NYC had been canceled.

The show, which had been slated to take place on Central Park’s Great Lawn and was expected to draw an audience of approximately 60,000 fans, initially was just delayed but concert promoters eventually decided to pull the plug on the event as the weather worsened and thunder and rain rolled in, Billboard.com reports. Among the other acts that had been scheduled to perform were Debbie Harry, LL Cool J and Natasha Bedingfield.

A rep for the concert has confirmed to MTV News that no new date has been scheduled. In a statement, the Robin Hood Foundation said, “The heat wasn’t going to stop them, the rain wasn’t going to stop them, but the lightning — it stopped them. It came down to safety for everyone. Organizers are hoping to reschedule, so ticket buyers should hold onto their tickets. Robinhood.org will have information in the next week or so.”

The artists themselves also have apologized to fans for the cancelation. Swift tweeted, “I was like ‘I get to sing with Fergie in NYC?!’ and then there was rain and lightning and they’re like ‘it’s cancelled’ and I was like [sad emoticon].”

The Black Eyed Peas, who reportedly performed an intimate show backstage for fans, also took to Twitter to posted about the nixed concert. “I’m so sad the show got postponed,” will.i.am wrote.

“Fergie is really sorry it’s not happening we feel horrible,” Taboo added on his Twitter page. “We are devastated and Fergie told me to tweet this she loves u all … I hope that the concert will be rescheduled ASAP, our pea-ple deserve it, my pea-ple from chase and robinhood deserve this NYC we love u.”

‘Twilight’ bloggers react to the teaser’s wedding and honeymoon scenes; now you go!

Go bananas, “Twilight” fans. The trailer you have been waiting for has arrived! On Sunday night (June 5) at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, the trailer for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ finally premiered. Before the promo’s debut, it had been all about teaser photos and bits of information from interviews with cast members, but now we’ve gotten our first glimpse at footage from the Bill Condon-directed film, which will hit screens in November.

The trailer certainly has everything Twi-Hards have been waiting for: a wedding, a honeymoon, a baby bump, as well as, yes, a shirtless Taylor Lautner. After getting a sneak peek, a number of “Twilight” experts and bloggers contributors already have taken to the Web to share their opinions about the trailer.

“I am blown away. I can’t believe they showed as much as they did,” Kara Hassell of TwilightersAnonymous.com said enthusiastically. “I’m so excited. I didn’t think they would hit as many points as they did. I am very pleased with Bill Condon and how he treated it.”

“Completely amazing, completely mind-blowing. Up until this my favorite trailer was the ‘New Moon’ trailer, and Bill Condon definitely got Chris Weitz; it’s got everything in it that you need,” gushed Laura Byrne-Cristiano, who owns TwilightLexicon.com.

“Well, wow! That’s pretty steamy for a PG-13 movie,” she continued. “The thing that made me laugh in a good way right away was Rob Pattinson, gripping that headboard and hearing that crack noise is spectacular.”

Kallie Matthews from TwilightSeriesTheories.com said, “The trailer was fantastic. It had way more than I thought it would but it still just wasn’t quite enough. … I was so excited that they had Bella pregnant. The fans are excited about that and we got to see it. I am thrilled; can’t wait to see the next.”

Ruben Fleischer, in his directorial debut, established himself as a savvy proponent of the celebrity cameo. Midway through 2009′s “Zombieland,” Bill Murray popped up in perfect out-of-nowhere fashion to steal some scenes and leave everyone wondering, “How’d they convince a comedy legend to dress up in zombie makeup and send up his own larger-than-life persona?”

And when Fleischer embarked upon his second feature, the action/comedy “30 Minutes or Less,” rumors began to swirl that the director had done it again, albeit with a far younger Hollywood player. Last summer, the Web began to buzz with word that Taylor Lautner had dropped into the Grand Rapids, Michigan set to shoot a cameo. Could it be true? When MTV News visited the set a few weeks later, Fleischer’s lips were sealed when we asked about the Twi-cameo.

On Friday night (June 3), at MTV’s Sneak Peak Week presentation of “30 Minutes,” it turned out that Lautner, in fact, was not in the film. So, during the post-screening Q&A, we put the question to Fleischer and stars Aziz Ansari and Nick Swardson.

“He’s in it!” Ansari said.

Wait, what? Did we somehow miss the most famous abs in Hollywood?

“He plays a bum,” Swardson chimed in.

Or not. The whole thing, it turns out, was just a rumor. “I read that somewhere. I was like, ‘I didn’t know about that,’ ” Ansari said, before reconsidering. Perhaps the suggestion that the “Twilight” star shows his face onscreen can goose the film’s box-office prospects.

“Let’s start that rumor,” Ansari cracked. “People like him, right? Just say he’s in the movie. ‘That Lautner cameo is dope, man! You gotta see that movie with Taylor Lautner!’ I’m just going to say that at the MTV Movie Awards. ‘Taylor Lautner’s in “30 Minutes or Less” Good night!’ ”
