Born to Die singer defends ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance in Rolling Stone interview.

Lana Del Rey was raked over the Internet coals following her January 14 performance on “Saturday Night Live.” Her takes on “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” were greeted with near-universal vitriol from critics, music bloggers and even NBC News anchor Brian Williams, who in a now-infamous email to Gawker Media founder Nick Denton called her performance “one of the worst outings in ‘SNL’ history.”

But the emerging pop star, whose debut album for Interscope, Born to Die, hit stores Tuesday (January 31), thinks she did a perfectly fine job on the legendary sketch show, telling Rolling Stone,“I actually felt good about it. I thought I looked beautiful and sang fine … I know some people didn’t like it, but that’s just the way I perform, and my fans know that.”

Del Rey did admit to being nervous, though in a more general sense, saying live performance has never been her strong suit because she is “not a natural performer or exhibitionist” and that when she was younger she “hated the focus; it made me feel strange.”

As the backlash intensified, Daniel Radcliffe, who hosted the January 14 show, came to Del Rey’s defense, telling reporters at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations, “It was unfortunate that people seemed to turn on her so quickly. I also think people are making it about things other than the performance … if you read what people are saying about her online, it’s all about her past and her family and stuff that’s nobody else’s business. I don’t think [the performance] warranted anywhere near that reaction.”

Del Rey echoed those same sentiments during her brief sit-down with Rolling Stone, chalking the intensity of the criticism up to people’s general disdain for her public persona. “There’s backlash about everything I do. It’s nothing new,” she told the music mag. “When I walk outside, people have something to say about it. It wouldn’t have mattered if I was absolutely excellent. People don’t have anything nice to say about this project.”

Regardless of the criticism, Del Rey is moving forward. Whether she’s a particularly strong live performer or not, her Born to Die album is enjoying a mostly positive reception from music critics … those able to set aside their feelings about her as a public figure and focus on the music itself anyway. Slate‘s Jonah Weiner commented that he liked the album more after a few listens: “The more time I spend in its company, the more I feel as though I’m approaching it on something like its own terms.”

MTV News’ own James Montgomery appreciated Born to Die even more, writing that Del Rey’s set is “positively brimming with atmospherics — soaring, sonorous strings, echoing electronic boom-bap, morose, maudlin guitar crescendos — all of which imbue it with a truly epic (if not unnecessarily dramatic) scope.”

The verdict on Del Rey’s musical future — and the impact the “SNL” fiasco and the endless think pieces that popped up in its aftermath — will likely come more sharply into focus this time next week when her first week sales figures are released.

DUNEDIN, Florida — “How many times have we heard this song already?” That’s what a beat reporter who’s been traveling with the Mitt Romney campaign said Monday afternoon (January 30) at the day’s second campaign stop in Florida. With less than 24 hours to go before Tuesday’s primary, Romney was about to take the stage to the strains of one of his signature warm-up songs, Toby Keith’s “Made in America,” and the press corps knew what was going to happen next with their notebooks closed.

“I’m gonna wake up in the middle of the night singing it,” the reporter sighed as the crowd in Pioneer Park filed in on a picture-perfect winter day. But for the writers and camera people slogging it out on the trail, it was “Groundhog Day” all over again: new town, same routine.

While the patriotic country tune kept pumping, the crowd of several hundred suddenly turned around en masse as Romney’s bus pulled up about 15 minutes late. It seems that like college parties, for presidential candidates, it’s all about showing up just a bit late — and making a cool entrance.

Fittingly, Romney referred to the Obama administration as the “groundhog presidency,” because, the former Massachusetts governor said, “He keeps saying the same thing, but nothing ever changes.”

Romney talked about the trips he used to take with his family as a child — including a visit to Florida’s Cypress Gardens — but you could feel the press tuning out as they waited for the obligatory recitation of the candidate’s favorite lines from “America the Beautiful.”

Following a loss in South Carolina last week, Romney was making his final appearances before Tuesday’s crucial Florida vote and he seemed loose and spirited, perhaps thanks to the comfortable lead he opened up against rival Newt Gingrich in the polls as the primary approached.

He left the audience with a stark message about the man he wants to ensure is a one-term president. “He didn’t cause the recession,” Romney said of President Obama. “But he made it worse.”

‘Twilight’ star drops out of big-screen adaptation of elastic Hasbro toy.

Bad news for those looking forward to seeing Taylor Lautner as super bendy, slightly superheroic “Stretch Armstrong”: He’s officially out of the big-screen treatment of the popular ’70s Hasbro toy.

MTV News confirmed Lautner’s departure with a source close to the production. According to The Wrap, Lautner had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. The “Twilight” heartthrob is reportedly set to begin work on an independent film with Oscar-winner Gus Van Sant.

Relativity Media announced Monday (January 30) that it will take over production of the film from Universal. The studio has inked a distribution deal with Hasbro. The movie was originally slated to be released in 2012, but it will now hit theaters on April 11, 2014. A new cast is expected to be announced shortly.

When MTV News asked Lautner about “Stretch Armstrong” last year, he seemed excited to explore the unknown with “Armstrong,” since the film version is a brand-new concept and not a reboot or sequel. He also admitted that the character’s superpower — the ability to stretch one’s body parts to extremes — is hardly super at all.

“It’s like the worst superhero power, possibly, to get, and how you’re going to take that and use it for good and how you’re going to be creative with that [is the predicament],” Lautner said. “The awesome thing with toys is it doesn’t give you a story line, so you get to create it.”

Although no creative decisions have been made yet, “Muppets” and “Get Him To The Greek” screenwriter Nick Stoller was originally attached to write the script and has said the film would be an origin story similar to the tone set in “Iron Man.”

“iCarly” is about to feel the effects of a British Invasion. The show has just booked British boy band One Direction to appear on the fifth season of the Miranda Cosgrove-starring show.

The guys will be on set Monday to tape their appearance on the episode, during which they will play themselves and perform “What Makes You Beautiful.”

According to a synopsis of the episode, “Carly returns home sick after a trip and discovers that One Direction has accepted an invitation to perform on their web show. Not long after arriving, bandmate Harry becomes sick and we see Carly doting over him. Realizing Harry is playing sick for the attention, they hatch a plan to get him back in the group by telling him Gibby has become their newest bandmember. Meanwhile, Spencer becomes a personal trainer and gives a bratty girl a makeover.”

The guys of One Direction, who got their start after appearing on “The X Factor” in 2010, are already superstars in their native U.K., and now it seems they are poised to break Stateside. Their debut album, Up All Night, is set for U.S. release on March 20, and they will be touring with Big Time Rush starting next month.

Cosgrove stopped by the MTV News offices recently and teased that there were some big plans in store for season five. “We’re just getting started to start the next season, so I’m not really sure what’s going to come, because it’s sort of a surprise for all of us even,” she said. “But I’ve heard Carly’s getting a boyfriend, so that’s exciting, and we’re gonna have some more musical guests, some big, different musical artists,” she said, noting that she’d love to get Katy Perry on the show. “There are a lot of different musical acts that I love, so it’s fun whenever we get to have music in an episode.”

Michelle Obama made an “iCarly” appearance earlier this month on a special episode that honored military families.

Still recovering from her foot injury, Halle Berry was spotted out for a relaxing brunch with Olivier Martinez and daughter Nahla at The Little Door in Hollywood, California on Sunday (January 29).

The Oscar-winning actress hobbled along with the help of her crutches as her “Dark Tide” co-star beau toted little Nahla in his arms and inside the local eatery.

The outing comes just after it was reported by TMZ that Miss Berry’s ex Gabriel Aubry has agreed to enroll in anger management classes.

“Gabriel has a little bit of a temper, but the good news is that he realizes it,” said a law enforcement official in the know, while Halle and Gabriel will learn the fate of their custody arrangement when they square off in court tomorrow (January 30).

Amid her personal woes, Demi Moore, who had been set to play Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic, has been replaced by “Weeds” star Mary-Louise Parker.

Sources confirm to UsMagazine.com that the TV star will fill in for Moore, who had to drop out of the film earlier this week after she was hospitalized for “exhaustion.” On Thursday, there was speculation that Chloë Sevigny would play the feminist icon when she was cast as a feminist journalist, but now it seems that those are two different roles.

“Lovelace” is currently shooting in Los Angeles with Amanda Seyfried playing the film’s central character, ’70s porn actress Linda Lovelace.

As the Demi drama rolls on, there are reports that Madonna reached out to the actress shortly after she was hospitalized. Moore has since been released from the L.A.-area hospital.

Sources tells E! News that the singer called her actress pal. “Madonna told Demi she was there if she needs anything,” the E! source says, adding, “They’re pretty tight.”

The ladies last hung out during Golden Globes weekend, and they reportedly were going to see one another again over Super Bowl weekend; Madge is slated to perform during the halftime show. The status of their annual post-Oscars bash is currently up in the air.

While speculation runs rampant about why Moore was hospitalized, sources say that her ex, Ashton Kutcher, is “deeply concerned” for her. Moore is rumored to have been doing nitrous oxide before landing in the hospital. “He still cares about her and wants the best for her,” the source added. “But their marriage is ending and they are both moving on with their lives.”

Bringing an end to another eventful week with a long overseas flight, Justin Bieber was spotted readying for departure from Los Angeles International Airport on Friday (January 27).

The 17-year-old Canadian sensation sported a Steelers ballcap, jean jacket and grey sweats as he and a travel companion worked through the International terminal to board the outbound aircraft.

As for his destination, Bieber is bound for the City of Lights, as he clued everyone in via Twitter by writing, “Anyone wanna fly to France?”

The travels come a day after Justin performed “Rockin’ Robin” at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre during a hand and footprint ceremony in honor of late pop superstar Michael Jackson.

With the King of Pop’s entire family on-hand for the festivities, the “Baby” singer tweeted to MJ’s daughter Paris after the spectacle, “@ParisJackson thanks for having me today and the things you said. your dad will always be my mentor. his career is all i study. #THEGREATEST”

‘Pants Back’ cast throws a party in Brooklyn to celebrate the show’s much-anticipated premiere on February 2.

NEW YORK — On Thursday night, the cast of MTV’s latest scripted comedy, “I Just Want My Pants Back,” gathered at the Public Assembly in Brooklyn, where they not only celebrated the show’s imminent arrival, but also got to hang out with their Thursday night cohorts, the cast of the “Jersey Shore.”

The pilot for the series originally got some love when it made its debut after the VMAs in August, and now it will officially kick off its run next Thursday. The cast, it seems, can’t wait to finally have it on air.

“At last! I know everyone’s been asking,” Jordan Carlos joked to MTV News about the long-simmering delay. “My parents can finally get off my back; it’s real. It’ll be on on Groundhog Day, which happens to be my birthday as well.”

“We’ve been seeing the commercials for the show for years now,” Sunkrish Bala teased. “Slow burn, but it’s all coming to a beautiful conclusion right now.”

“It feels so crazy to be here right now,” co-star Kim Shaw said. “We wanted people to see it at the VMAs to give people a taste of what we were filming, and now that we’re finished with the series, we’re so excited that everyone gets to see the whole thing.”

Having already had one very high-profile premiere, it seems that next week it will get one more thanks to the “Jersey Shore” as its lead-in. “It’s awesome,” Elisabeth Hower said. “The fact that the network has so much confidence around us really means a lot, and I think that says a lot about the show. Please watch the show. We’re nice people.”

“It’s an amazing lead-in,” said Peter Vack, leading man of “Pants Back.” ” ‘Jersey Shore’ is a great show.”

While “Jersey Shore” and “Pants Back” may seem like different shows on the surface — one’s scripted, one’s a reality show; one’s about hipsters, one’s about guidos — they both deal with a group of friends navigating their love lives. “Pants Back” follows a group of twentysomethings in New York City as they pilot love, friendship and the job market with a good dose of dirty humor and some heart thrown in for good measure.

“The show just goes so many fun places,” Vack teased. “It’s just a crazy ride, and I’m excited for people to take the ride with us.”

“Pants Back” premieres on February 2 at 11 P.M. ET/PT right after “Jersey Shore.”

As the latest season of “Parks and Recreation” rolls along, fans of the quirky NBC comedy have been rooting for the show’s leading lady, Leslie Knope, as she tries to win the hearts of the folks in Pawnee, Indiana, by running for a spot on the city council.

But Leslie isn’t having all the fun. Pawnee’s resident curmudgeon, Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman), is finding himself caught up in an unexpected friendship with the always-optimistic government star Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe). As always, Swanson is working to make sure government doesn’t run smoothly, and of course he faces the possibility that one of his ex-wives could show up and bring their own brand of trouble to his life.

“If we can help it,” Offerman told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival when asked if there would be a chance to bring back one of his character’s former wives, both named Tammy (one played by his real-life wife, Megan Mullally, and the other by Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson). “I know that there’s one juicy story coming up in the fall for Tammy Two, the evil Tammy Two [Mullally].”

But until then, Offerman, offscreen, will be wearing another hat. He recently wrote one of the show’s upcoming episodes, and in addition to some more Knope-related election excitement there will also be a shakeup in his character’s romantic life.

“Oh gosh. It was so fun and exciting and crazy. The episode is called ‘Lucky.’ Leslie Knope gets this really lucky interview with sort of the Anderson Cooper of Indianapolis. But then the interview is canceled and it comes back on, and some hilarity ensues,” he explained. “Meanwhile, Ron Swanson and Chris Traeger are vying for the attentions of Andy Dwyer’s women’s studies college professor. It’s very funny.”

Too $hort has built quite the reputation with the ladies in his 30-plus years in rap. Songs like “Freaky Tales” and “I’m a Player” expertly showcase Short Dog’s ability to seduce women with his raps, so when his record label requested that he work with Lil’ Kim on the 1997 single “Call Me,” Kim’s then on-and-off boyfriend the Notorious B.I.G. was more than a little concerned.

“I paid for the tickets for Kim and her manager to come to Atlanta and I went to pick them up to take them to the studio and who gets off the plane? No Lil’ Kim, it was Biggie,” Too $hort recalled with a laugh when he appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.”

Though $hort and B.I.G. had built a good rapport before the Brooklyn great was slain in 1997, prior to recording with Kim, they didn’t really know each other. Too $hort remembers B.I.G. coming off the plane on a pair of crutches that he was forced to use after he was involved in a car accident. The two sat down to talk, and according to $hort, the Notorious one inquired about the Oakland rapper’s intentions with his artist and sometime love interest. “So what’s goin’ on with you and Kim? What’s happenin’?” Too $hort remembered Biggie asking.

After $hort explained to Big that he only was interested in recording with Kim for his single, the “Juicy” rapper approved the collaboration. “He wanted to know what was goin’ on with his little thang before he let it happen,” $hort said. “So I explained it to him… and sure enough she showed up on the next flight. We got in the lab and we worked it out.” Kim, who titled her 1996 debut album Hardcore, had become known for her sexually explicit lyrics, just like Too $hort, but the first version of “Call Me” didn’t quite meet expectations, $hort revealed. “Believe it or not, we did the song and everybody said, ‘Man, it’s not dirty enough,’ ” $hort laughed.

Eventually they re-recorded the dirty version that fans have come to know. “We tried to, like, have sex on the song,” he said. “It wasn’t physical sex, but we tried to make musical sex. I think we achieved it.”
