MONTVILLE, CONNECTICUT — Hours after the world paid its final goodbye to Whitney Houston in New Jersey, ex-husband Bobby Brown paid his alongside bandmates New Edition before a sold-out crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Brown’s remarks came just hours after the singer’s rapid departure from Houston’s funeral services at Newark, New Jersey’s New Hope Baptist church.

Brown sat out the night’s first three songs, then took the stage for “Hit Me Off.”  He acknowledged the fallen icon before “Jealous Girl.”

“I want to give blessings to my ex-wife, Whitney Houston. I love you,” Brown said, pointing towards the sky. “I want to give a lot of blessings to my kids, my fiancée, my brothers, and all of you.”

Brown and his New Edition band-mates powered through a set that lasted almost two hours, including hits from Brown’s 1988 solo smash, “My Prerogative,” to Bell Biv DeVoe’s 1990 hit, “Poison.”

“I lost three great people in my life, in the last year,” Brown told the audience of over 7,000 before the sextet wrapped with “Home Again.” “But, nothing makes me happier than to be right here, right now.”

Some New Edition fans, like Lisa Pollock of Bridgeport, Conn., were simply happy just to see Houston’s ex-husband in the building.

“[New Edition] just held it together. I can’t imagine what today was like for them,” Pollock said after the concert. “For them to come and do a show for all of us, definitely exceeded my expectations.”

Serita Outlow of Norwich, Conn. also attended the show unsure if Brown would make it.

“I think he did an excellent job considering what he must have been feeling,” she said. “I don’t know what he went through with his voice today but I think he still pulled it off.”

A few months before the release of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West took to Hot 97′s Angie Martinez-hosted radio show to promote his G.O.O.D. Friday series, but also to make a seemingly odd proclamation. “The scariest artist in the game right now … the scariest artist is definitely Nicki Minaj,” West said. “I think she has the most potential out of everyone to be the #2 rapper of all time.”

While we won’t even wade into a “hottest MCs of all time” debate, MTV News’ Hip-Hop Brain Trust eventually voted Nicki into the plum #4 spot on the Hottest MCs in the Game VII list.

In the summer of 2010, Minaj was the acid-tongued “two” to Drake’s “one” in Lil Wayne’s Young Money one-two punch. With her debut album still on the way, she was murdering features left and right.

“When she hit the scene, she was just like the pretty girl alongside Wayne,” said Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news. “Drake was really the next one that everyone was looking out for.”

But by the time she dropped her Pink Friday debut last November, the world was on notice. Now, Nicki’s success spans the pop and hip-hop worlds, and her fanbase is just as eclectic, with young girls and “Kens” all riding for the Young Money Barbie. Minaj’s song “Super Bass” was just a bonus track on the album, but it won over fans including squeaky-clean Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, both of whom jumped on the record, rapping along line for line to the infectious track. “Bass” may have even helped Nicki score a spot opening for Britney Spears on her Femme Fatale Tour.

As far as our Hottest MCs criteria, Nicki meets them all. Her impact is undeniable and, lyrically, she holds her own when she’s playing with the boys: She stole the show on Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$)” remix and declared herself the Female Weezy on Birdman’s “Y.U. Mad.” Need more proof? Minaj shut down New York Fashion Week in September 2011. And she has conquered hip-hop’s digital landscape.

“Recently, she broke the record for the most followed hip-hop artist on Twitter; her social media following is incredible,” said Nadeska Alexis, MTV’s RapFix blog editor. “She dropped the song ‘Stupid Hoe’ — people didn’t necessarily love the song [but] a week later it’s at 15 million views on YouTube.”

While her songs may not always appeal to “the streets,” millions of her fans have bought into Nicki’s sound. And her performance at the 2012 Grammys, while controversial, was a huge honor and a testament to the lane she’s carved for herself.

After the roundtable votes were tallied, Nicki was initially slotted at #5 with Young Money boss Wayne clocking in at #4, but several members of the Brain Trust felt strongly enough about Nicki’s accomplishments that her position warranted a second look. Hottest MCs moderator Sway Calloway called for a vote and in the end, six of the nine experts elected to move Nicki up to the #4 spot, sending Weezy down to #5.

“Nicki Minaj doesn’t have to be Meek Mill, but at the same time she’s not Britney Spears,” said Steven Roberts, a segment producer/writer at MTV News. “I think Nicki Minaj is something special where she can be in the middle and she can be pop and hip-hop because I think hip-hop at this point is pop.”

Music fans around the world were shocked when reports of Whitney Houston‘s unexpected death were confirmed last Saturday. The singer had been staying at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as she prepared for Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party and was seen out on the town in the days before her passing.

While the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has not confirmed the cause of the legendary “I Will Always Love You” singer’s death, a lethal mix of prescription medication and alcohol is heavily rumored to be the culprit.

The week since Houston’s passing has been a hectic one, as officials scramble to find out what killed the singer and whether negligence on the part of medical professionals treating her is at least partially to blame. Meanwhile, Houston’s family, friends, fans and music-industry peers continue to mourn the star, who will be laid to rest Saturday (February 18) in her native Newark, New Jersey. Flags across the state will be flown at half-staff this weekend out of respect for Houston.

With so much information pouring in since Houston’s death, it’s been difficult to discern what is fact, speculation and pure rumor. So as the world prepares for her memorial service, we have pulled together what we know so far about Houston’s passing, the impact it’s had on the entertainment industry, the reaction of her fans, family and friends, and her legacy.

Houston’s Untimely Death
Twitter first ignited with rumors of Houston’s death last Saturday after emergency medical professionals were called to the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The sad rumor was confirmed to MTV News by Houston’s rep, Kristen Foster, with Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen telling on-scene reporters, “Someone in her entourage found her unresponsive in her room. … Our detectives are still in the room, and her body is still here as well. I can confirm that Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We received a call at 3:43 p.m. from hotel security and Beverly Hills Fire, and police responded minutes later.”

Houston was found in the bathtub of her hotel suite by a member of her personal staff. Paramedics initiated CPR on the “I Will Always Love You” singer but were unable to revive her. No illegal drugs were found in Houston’s suite, however, prescription medication was discovered. On Monday, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office downplayed speculation that Houston had succumbed to an accidental overdose, saying “not many prescription bottles” were found, adding that the amount of medication found did not correspond with the amounts typically present in deaths attributed to overdose. Rather, the current leading theory remains that it was combining those medications (heavily rumored to be Xanax and other mood-altering benzodiazepines) with alcohol that led to the star’s death.

Houston’s family is, of course, deeply distraught over her unexpected passing. Daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was taken by paramedics from the Beverly Hilton Hotel to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in a state of emotional distress early Sunday. Her father and Houston’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown, flew to California to be with his daughter after breaking down himself onstage Saturday night. “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” Brown told the audience at a New Edition concert in Mississippi. “Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage.”

Houston’s family released a statement, saying, “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends.”

Music-Industry Reaction
The reaction to Houston’s death was swift, as stars expressed their grief on Twitter, in statements through their representatives and in person to press assembled at the 54th Grammy Awards on Sunday — just one day after her passing.

The most immediate responses to her death hit Twitter early Saturday evening. Mariah Carey was among the first to issue a statement, tweeting, “My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”

Rihanna and Nicki Minaj hit the social network to express their sadness soon after. Rihanna wrote, “No words! Just tears #DearWhitney.” Unable to hide her grief, Minaj was a bit more profane, tweeting, “Jesus Christ, not Whitney Houston. Greatest of all time,” along with a vintage photo of the late singer alongside Michael Jackson.

“The loss of Whitney Houston is painful. I remember meeting Whitney for the first time when I was 15. She was the ultimate legend. The ultimate woman,” Beyoncé said in a statement to MTV News. “I, like every singer, always wanted to be just like her. Her voice was perfect. Strong but soothing. Soulful and classic. Her vibrato, her cadence, her control. So many of my life’s memories are attached to a Whitney Houston song. She is our queen and she opened doors and provided a blueprint for all of us. God bless her.”

The Grammys took on a somber note following Houston’s death. On the red carpet before the show, stars expressed their grief. Fergie told MTV News that Houston was “such an inspiration to me ever since I was a little girl,” while Kings of Leon’s Michael Followill remarked that Houston had “literally one of the most beautiful voices of maybe any female singer ever — perfect tone, great range, just a mix of all the things you want to hear.”

At the top of the show, host LL Cool J led the audience in a prayer for Houston. A tribute to the late star was added at the last minute, with Jennifer Hudson, one of the many strong-voiced stars who have been compared to Houston over the years, agreeing to perform her biggest hit, “I Will Always Love You,” on the telecast. With tears in her eyes, Hudson delivered a performance that brought the house down.

Whitney’s Legacy
Houston’s career was, in many ways, unprecedented. At her peak in the late ’80s and early ’90s, she was among the most famous and beloved pop stars in the world, and the list of honors and records she achieved is seemingly endless.

Houston was the first woman to receive two diamond awards from the Recording Industry Association of America, after her self-titled debut and “The Bodyguard” soundtrack both topped 10 million in sales. Until Britney Spears’ … Baby One More Time unseated it, her debut was the top-selling debut ever for a female artist. Her signature single, “I Will Always Love You,” topped the Hot 100 charts on Billboard for 14 consecutive weeks, a record at the time, and is one of the best-selling U.S. singles of all time. Her sophomore set, Whitney, was the first album by a woman to enter the Billboard albums chart at #1.

She was also one of the few pop stars who was ever able to find success in film. “The Bodyguard” was a massive success at the box office, grossing $410 million worldwide. A few years later, she found success again in “Waiting to Exhale” and earned career-best reviews for “The Preacher’s Wife.” Before her death, she completed filming on a remake of the 1967 film “Sparkle,” which will be released by Sony in August.

To her fans, though, Houston will remain “the original diva” who had “one of the best voices in R&B history.”

Houston’s death has reinvigorated interest in her music. In the days immediately following her death, Houston’s back catalog experienced a sales surge of nearly 900,000 digital song downloads and 100,000 albums. Whitney: The Greatest Hits re-entered the Billboard 200 at #6 and “I Will Always Love You” leapt back onto the Hot 100 at #7. Three other Houston albums — “The Bodyguard” soundtrack, Whitney Houston and her final studio album, 2009′s I Look to You — resurfaced on the albums chart, and seven singles charted on the digital songs chart.

Ultimately, as she revealed in a 1991 interview showcased as part of MTV’s tribute special “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,” Houston hoped to remembered as a good person who always had the best intentions.

“Well, they’re going to remember me how they’re going to remember me. They’re going to write books, they’re going to do this, they’re going to write that, and everybody is going to have their own idea,” she said. “I don’t know, I want to be remembered for being a real nice person, somebody who cared and tried to do everybody righteously.”

Kendra tweeted about the game, saying, “I play centerfield. We playin a very competitive league…where the big boys play n me hahahaha.”

Even though the 26-year-old’s team didn’t do so well, she still seemed in good spirits. “We lost. I had a great defense day today though so I’m happy about that lol.”

When the former “Dancing With The Stars” contestant wasn’t running the bases or playing center field, she was loving up on her son, Hank Jr., who wore a t-shirt reading: “I’m Gonna Be On A Cereal Box Someday.”

NEWARK, New Jersey — With her music, Whitney Houston brought joy to the lives of her family, friends and fans, so it is only right that exactly one week after her death, on the day of her funeral, all the love Whitney gave is given right back.

Fans lined the streets of Newark, New Jersey, in hopes of getting as close as they could to the New Hope Baptist Church, where the funeral for Houston, who was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel on February 11, is being held. It is the same church the pop diva grew up attending and where she built a loving fanbase even as a youngster with her powerful church choir vocals.

“Everybody, I want them to know that God sent us an angel, and now his angel has gone back home to rest and sing in heaven,” Patricia Copeland Williams, a Houston family friend, told MTV News on Friday upon leaving the pop star’s wake at New Hope Baptist. “We will always love her and we’ll always remember, and we’re never going to forgot Cissy, the woman that birthed her.”

The Houston funeral is a private affair and only invited guests are allowed into the church and the surrounding city blocks. Before the ceremony, fans gathered outside of police barricades on the corner of Orange and Nesbitt streets, about four blocks from the church, singing Houston’s hits including “Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You.” Media outlets lined the block on the corner of Lock Street and Essex Avenue, but without an invite, that was about as close as anybody would get.

Musical luminaries and close friends Clive Davis, Stevie Wonder and CeCe Winans are all expected to attend. Kevin Costner, who starred with Houston in the 1992 hit film “The Bodyguard” and ex-husband Bobby Brown are also among the expected attendees.

Aretha Franklin, who is Whitney’s close family friend, had been scheduled to sing “I Will Always Love You” at the service but canceled due to illness, according to CNN. Franklin performed in Whitney’s honor Friday night at Radio City Music Hall.

The sudden death of Whitney Houston has left her family, friends and fans broken-hearted. And on Friday (February 17), her close friend Ray J finally ended his silence, releasing this statement to MTV News:

“Over the past few days I’ve tried to process the emptiness that I am experiencing. What my heart feels cannot be expressed in words. The world lost an icon but I lost my close friend. Nippy I miss you so much! You were so happy and full of love. Your smile will live in my heart forever.”

The “One Wish” singer was no doubt close to Houston, and while neither ever confirmed a romance, it was widely speculated that he and Houston were an item.

Soon after Houston was found dead in her L.A. hotel room on February 11, reports began to surface that it was Ray J who found her body in a bath tub at the Beverly Hilton. Those reports were quickly refuted by Ray J’s representative.

The statement comes just a day before Houston is to be laid to rest following her funeral at Newark, New Jersey’s New Hope Baptist Church Saturday at noon.

The funeral is invite-only, but fans will be able to watch an online live stream. New Hope Pastor Joe A. Carter will preside over the ceremony, and gospel singer Marvin Winans will give the eulogy.

People magazine reported on Thursday that Kevin Costner, who co-starred with Houston in the 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” will also speak at the funeral.

This Sunday, a slew of celebrities will backstab and cat fight their way to the top of the heap when “Celebrity Apprentice” kicks off its new season. Considering who made the cut — a Gotti, a real housewife, several comedians and a few pop stars — drama will certainly ensue.

MTV News had the pleasure of catching up with Debbie Gibson and former Danity Kane singer Aubrey O’Day, who revealed how they went from enemies to besties while shooting the show.

“I was somewhat familiar, but I was a little bit of a victim of perception,” Gibson said about O’Day, who is best known for her drama-filled run on MTV’s “Making the Band.” “I knew Aubrey’s persona, but not really a lot about her; I try not to judge anybody until I meet them anyway.”

“I had Debbie Gibson, of course, on my iPod, and if I didn’t have it on my iPod, I heard every one of her songs during the entire show,” O’Day joked.

While the two ladies are good pals now, O’Day recalls when that wasn’t the case. “We didn’t get along in the beginning; it wasn’t disrespectful,” she teased. “She was always singing all the time; it got on my nerves, but then we really got along. It’s like a distant memory now.”

Gibson, who owned up to being the “obnoxious singing girl,” recalled when the two finally started to relate to each other. “There was an episode where we saw eye-to-eye over somebody else that was agitating both of us. So we bonded over that. We were kind of like ‘Oh my god! We’re on the same page after all.’ ”

O’Day describes both girls as having Type-A personalities, making it easy for them to eventually bury the hatchet. “What I like about Aubrey is we kind of didn’t care that we didn’t jell. … We were being real about it,” Gibson said. “And then we were able to get over it.”

Hosted by Donald Trump, the show will also feature “American Idol” season two runner-up Clay Aiken, racecar driver Michael Andretti, TV and radio personality Adam Carolla, actor Lou Ferrigno, former talk-show host Arsenio Hall, magician Penn Jillette, rocker Dee Snider, “Star Trek” actor George Takei, “American Chopper” star Paul Teutul Sr., actress Tia Carrere, “Real Housewives” castmember Teresa Giudice, Victoria Gotti of “Growing Up Gotti,” comedian Lisa Lampanelli, model and actress Cheryl Tiegs, Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza, and actress and model Patricia Velasquez.

The celebrity winner will earn $250,000 for the charity of their choice.

Woe is the woman entangled in a complicated, messy love triangle — particularly one that involves easy-on-the-eyes actors Chris Pine (“Star Trek”) and Tom Hardy (“Warrior,” “Inception”). This is the dilemma Reese Witherspoon faces as lucky lady in love with two very-eligible CIA operatives in “This Means War,” released Friday (February 17). Hopefully, you can read our sarcasm, because we don’t feel any ounce of sympathy for Witherspoon, as she had the best of both worlds working on the film.

There are, of course, pitfalls to real-life love triangles, so when MTV News hit up the premiere of the new action-filled romantic comedy, we asked the stars to debate the pros and cons of being caught between two eligible romantic interests.

“I guess the pros of a love triangle is that they make life more exciting,” Pine offered.

Abigail Spencer, who plays Hardy’s character’s ex-wife, said, “I think there’s only cons,” adding “I think the only pro is that you might discover who you actually like by having a distraction but it forces you to make a decision.”

“I can’t even answer that question,” Hardy admitted. “I’m trying to think of too many literal answers.”

Chelsea Handler, meanwhile, provided a thoughtful answer to our poll: “You get to have sex with two people simultaneously, but at some point, you have to tell the truth to both people so they’re OK with it, and then you have to pick one,” she said. “It should only happen for a myopic period of time.”

“I wouldn’t know from any personal experiences,” Witherspoon chimed in. “But from the movie, I think it’s very complicated dating best friends.”

The film’s director, McG, admitted to speaking from personal experience: “That’s difficult to ask because I’ve only been on the losing end of any love triangle I’ve been a part of because all of my friends are super good-looking.”

It all began earlier this week, when the production duo known as Da Internz told MTV News that their upcoming remix of Rihanna‘s “Birthday Cake” featured a super-secret cameo that would “shock the world.”

Almost immediately after they made that comment, speculation began to run rampant that it was Rihanna’s ex, Chris Brown, who features on the track, and though there was no confirmation from any of the artists’ reps, the rumors not only persisted but seemingly gained momentum — especially given reports that Brown attended Rihanna’s birthday party earlier in the week.

On Thursday, Hot 97′s Miss Info took things to the next level, writing on her blog that Brown does indeed feature on the “Cake” remix, citing a pair of “independent sources” who confirmed the news. She added that Brown contributed both a singing verse and a rap verse to the track, though it wasn’t clear if both would end up on the remix.

Of course, that probably comes as news to Da Internz, who have denied that Brown features on the remix. In a subsequently deleted tweet, they responded to a Rihanna fan’s question about whether the song would feature Brown with a succinct — and all-caps — “NOPE.”

Wrapped up in all this are newly circulating photos that seem to show Brown and Rihanna embracing at her birthday party in Beverly Hills, perhaps confirming that they’ve reunited. There had been no comment from either artist’s camp on the pictures as of press time, though in the days following the party, TMZ reported that all guests were asked to sign a confidentiality agreement, supposedly at Brown’s insistence.

There’s still been no official word on when the “Birthday Cake” remix will be released (some reports suggest it’ll be out next week), and reps for Da Internz, Brown and Rihanna did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment on the track — meaning that, like the rest of the world, we’re just going to have to wait to learn the identity of RiRi’s mystery collaborator.

“This Means War” has all the makings of a perfect romantic comedy/ action flick, including the very attractive and high-caliber stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, the capable direction of McG, comic relief from Chelsea Handler and a script from the guys whose combined talents have brought us “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Role Models” and “Just Go With It.”

The story revolves around two best friends and highly skilled CIA agents who fall in love with the same woman and go to war with each other in an effort to win her heart. We imagine the filmmakers set out to make a fun, if only slightly farfetched, popcorn flick, but the critical masses couldn’t seem to suspend their disbelief. The film has a 30 percent Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Story
“Having great-looking stars who have the added bonus of actually being able to act makes the noisy romp ‘This Means War’ more tolerable that it ought to be. It’s essentially a love-triangle version of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” rendered even more bombastic in the hands of “Charlie’s Angels” director McG. (Simon Kinberg, who wrote the 2005 film that spawned Brangelina, shares script credit here with Timothy Dowling.) So you’ve got your sport utility vehicles tumbling in slow motion, your gravity-defying shootouts and your obligatory explosions galore. Naturally, the premise is the most high-concept, contrived confection: Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), who has no idea these guys know each other. The Bromance Factor
“The relationship that truly sizzles — from the sentiment to the satire — is the one between FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), with Pine and Hardy pulling off one of the better bromances in recent memory. … Hardy (‘Inception’) and Pine (‘Star Trek’) are the heart of the film — proving to be excellent opposing sides of the same coin. Both balance their characters’ cynicism with a certain sweetness, their chemistry fairly crackling, electrifying the screen almost any time they’re sharing it, whether taking down a bad guy or squabbling about who is more lovable (it’s a tossup). With Lauren, on the other hand, they are basically gentlemen, so not electrifying.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

The Suspension of Disbelief Factor, or Lack Therof
“And in the film’s opening minutes, it feels as if that might be the desired effect: It’s loaded with overblown action chestnuts like from-the-hip gunplay, people dangling from the sides of skyscrapers and a gruff commanding officer. (That would be Angela Bassett, who shows up periodically to growl at her charges in a role that might have been hilarious had anyone thought to write anything legitimately funny for her.) But a good parody takes a finesse that isn’t in the vocabulary of McG, a bargain-basement Michael Bay more concerned with cool than coherence. Instead we get utter nonsense like a video store with a database that conveniently includes customer photos for the CIA to tap into. (Related: These characters are, in 2012, going to a video store?) In another scene, FDR wrestles on the floor with a small dog that has just attacked him, as Lauren stands 5 feet away, oblivious. The Farrelly brothers should sue the producers not for stealing the scene outright from ‘There’s Something About Mary,’ but for imitating it so badly.” — Ian Buckwalter, NPR

“Part spy caper, part buddy picture, part romantic comedy, part raunchy-girl-talk sex farce, This Means War has been assembled with all the haphazardness of an amateur science experiment. The project was directed by the amped-up industry go-getter McG (Charlie’s Angels), and it’s had a long trial-and-error history. The initial script dates back a century — or at least about a decade — and the string of famous guys who didn’t take the dual lead male roles reportedly includes Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Sam Worthington, and, stretching even further back, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. All this fiddling and fumbling shows on the screen. And yet, and yet … I confess I enjoyed everything that’s all over the place about the finished product. ‘This Means War’ may have been hammered together by brute Hollywood force, but there’s this going for it: It’s game to throw in anything that’ll keep the motor running.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
