Does Demi Lovato Have ‘The X Factor’?

The world is still reacting to the now-confirmed news that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will sit together at the “The X Factor” judges table this fall. While their spots on the show remain among worst-kept secrets in recent memory, these two former Disney princesses will now set out to prove they are savvy enough to judge up-and-coming talent on the Fox competition series.

While L.A. Reid, Simon Cowell and Spears bring decades of experience with them to the show, Lovato, only 19, may seem too much like a rookie on the surface. But, she’s already amassed the kind of experience performers triple her age could wish for.

She’s released three albums, which have all landed top-five spots on the Billboard 200. She’s starred on the hit Disney series, “Sonny With a Chance” and was the female lead, alongside the Jonas Brothers, in both “Camp Rock” films, which were incredibly successful for the Mouse House.

All the success at such a young age makes Lovato a perfect pick for the show. “They’re looking for female pop singers who can engage a younger audience,” Monica Herrera, a senior editor at Rolling Stone, told MTV News. “Demi seems like a good choice because she hits not just music fans, but TV fans and I think they’re kind of trying to find somebody who can hit all angles.”

She may have tons of teenage Lovatics, but Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts/retail at Billboard, added that she still hasn’t yet permeated the adult market, which makes this the right time to make this move.

“I thought it was interesting choice just because, I mean, she is a star, but she seems a bit under the radar to a degree so this is a great look for her because it’s going to elevate her visibility and give her a whole new audience and a great platform to introduce new material,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for her to really expand her fanbase. I think a lot of people are going to discover Demi for the very first time.”

And, that’s why, Herrera adds, she needs to strike while the iron is hot. “I think it’s definitely a smart move; I don’t think she can afford to wait at this point. I think that is kind of a way to jumpstart it and really get herself out there,” she explained. “Obviously she’s gonna want to put out an album timed to the fall show. She’ll have the team behind her to really kind of maximize this opportunity and put out a single and an album that will kind of get the lift that she really needs right now.”

Caulfield notes that Lovato will serve as the perfect answer to Spears. “Demi, considering her history and frankly her years of experience, she’s gone through the ringer,” he said. “Demi is probably going to have more realistic commentary, probably not harsh but probably coming from the point of view of ‘I did this before.’ Certainly her and Britney have the X factor, that something about them that makes them stars, it’s hard to pin down. I think it’s going to be good. I think they’re both interesting choices.”

So for anyone wondering if Lovato is still too young to mentor, well, Herrera says they should put those concerns aside. “I really think it does [help that she's young], especially since they are skewing younger and younger with the contestants. I think someone like Demi would have been perfect for someone like Rachel Crow [who competed last season]. She obviously knows what it’s like to be thrust into the spotlight in that way from a really young age,” she said. “I really think that she can be that guiding force.”

Exclusive ‘Battleship’ Clip: Taylor Kitsch And Rihanna Go Rogue

Did you see it? Did you catch it in all its epic glory? As part of “MTV First: Battleship,” the A-list cast — featuring Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker — premiered a never-before-seen clip Monday night (April 30) from the film.

The exclusive scene opens with an injured Commander Stone Hopper (Skarsgård) looking a little worried as his brother, Lt. Alex Hopper (Kitsch), takes a tiny boat of troops out on the water to get up close and personal with the sea invaders. We have no naval experience and even we know this can’t be a good idea. But the officers prove to be some fearless competition for the machines as Kitsch screams to Rihanna, “Light it up!” And as promised, the Talk That Talk singer gets fierce as she aggressively fires away at the aliens.

As one of Stone’s officers reports that “both spy and fire-control radar cannot lock on” to the foreign predators, Stone orders the crew to fire anyway and Alex narrowly avoids a bomb that comes flying at his head. The war zone continues as Stone’s ship keeps trying to fight off incoming missiles. The clip captures the mayhem that is sure to be the Hasbro film adaptation.

From what we’ve seen so far, it seems that when Kitsch promised “huge” action when we spoke to him last fall, he meant it.

“You don’t know what to expect with ‘Battleship,’ especially when we team up, [director Peter Berg] and I, you’re going to get a lot of laughs, guaranteed,” he said. “And, of course, the action is going to speak for itself. It’s huge.”

But this clip — taking place in the middle of the heated battle — does not include any laughs. As Stone attempts to aid his brother’s offensive attacks and remain on the defensive to protect his crew, his ship gets hit and the bomb goes off. What happens next is an intense explosion that knocks the officers away from the bomb, sucks them back in and tosses them away again. Did we mention they’re suspended in the air the whole time as debris and heavy objects fly all around them? Things do not look good for the naval crew right now.

Audiences will be able to see if the fleet of ships prevails when “Battleship” hits theaters May 18.

Kevin Richardson is Backstreet’s Back, all right. The fifth member of the Backstreet Boys has announced that he is formally rejoining the group after leaving in June 2006.

In footage posted on their website from their show with New Kids on the Block at London’s O2 Arena, BSB member Nick Carter told the excited room, “I think we should let them in on the secret we have. Since we love you guys so much, especially in London, that we are going to come back, we are going to be back in July to record the next Backstreet Boys album this year.”

While that bit of news had the crowd cheering, it was what Brian Littrell shared that really got the room screaming. “There’s two parts to that secret,” he said. “And Kevin is coming back!” They then added that they might play shows with all 10 members of NKOTBSB.

Though Richardson left the group six years ago, he has made sporadic concert appearances with the band, including one on the Backstreet Boys cruise back in December. Still, the remaining members of the band always were skeptical that a full-fledged reunion would ever take place.

On Twitter, they had this additional message for their fans. “Now everything is back to normal … Welcome back @kevinrichardson.” For his part, Kevin seemed pretty stoked about being reunited with his band of brothers, adding on his Twitter, “Hello beau-ti-ful people. Yes, the cat is OFFICIALLY out of the bag. It’s on and crackin!”

Richardson’s return wasn’t the only big news the guys of BSB had for fans. A.J. McLean posted a video message revealing that he and his wife, Rochelle, are expecting their first child together. “Because we love you all so much, we wanted to share with you for the first time something very special: We’re having a baby!” the couple said in the video message. “See you guys soon.”

Lindsay Lohan’s Glams Up the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

After attending a brunch earlier in the day, Lindsay Lohan got all glammed up for the 98th Annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, DC on Saturday night (April 28).

The “Mean Girls” starlet dolled up the Washington Hilton red carpet in a flowing black frock as she hobnobbed with the elite guest list in attendance.

As for how she managed to get an invite, Miss Lohan is on-hand as a guest of Fox host Greta Van Susteren while also joining her always-busy defense attorney, Shawn Holley.

With Jimmy Kimmel playing host at the annual event, this year’s edition will raise money for the CURE and The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood organizations.

It’s not always easy being in a boy band. There are a lot of preconceptions for the five guys who choose to sing catchy pop tunes and dance in formation for a living.

Given that boy bands have come in and out of fashion once every decade for the last few years, it should come as no surprise that we are knee-deep in a brand-new boy-band bonanza. This one is being led by this generation’s ‘NSYNC and Backstreet Boys: One Direction and the Wanted.

When MTV News sat down with the Wanted to premiere their “Chasing the Sun” video, they chatted a bit about being labeled a “boy band.”

“Eventually, we were, like, over it,” Jay McGuiness explained. “If you like us despite it or because of it, then we’re happy.”

Well, something is working for the guys. Their lead U.S. single, “Glad You Came,” has topped the charts, and they are once again getting people dancing with “Chasing the Sun,” from their just-released debut U.S. EP. It’s a good time to be in a boy band, thanks to all the love out there for them. And it’s an even better time to be in the Wanted.

It seems that their success might have a lot to do with the way they’ve approached their boy-band career thus far. “We went out there and we’re like, ‘You know what? I think we can change people’s perspectives of the ’90s boy bands,’ ” Tom Parker explained. “And that was our aim: just to make good music.”

Drake Says He’ll ‘Thrive’ On Next Album

Drizzy says that while a lot of Take Care was down, he will switch up the tempo for his next album.

Since he dropped his breakout tape So Far Gone in 2009, Drake has been consistently going through changes. With each music project, he documents his ever-evolving life, so fans shouldn’t expect that to change when he finally releases his third LP. Drizzy didn’t want to give too much away, but from the sound of things, it’ll be much different from his sophomore effort Take Care.

“I think that my mood will be reflected in the tempos that I choose for the music,” Drake said of his next LP during a press conference call Tuesday. “A lot of Take Care, it’s down, a lot of it’s down and I think a lot of that had to do with being back home in Toronto and getting reacquainted with the life I had before and the difficulties of that, but at the same time trying to express excitement and trying to express joy.”

Though he still keeps a place in his native Toronto, Drake has recently moved to L.A. The relocation has already sparked musical ideas for the Young Money star. “There’s just so much going on for me in the U.S. that I recently made the move to L.A.,” he said. “It’s a new atmosphere, getting to know new people. It’s going to be a very interesting album.”

Drake told MTV News that with Take Care, he was telling a story inspired by his 2009 track “Houstatlantavegas.” On the song, Drake created a fictional world, describing a love affair with an ambitious stripper who can’t quite get out of the life. “It was a world that was very much real to me, but I created it in my mind. It was a world that, being a kid from Toronto, I used to look at from the outside and I used to be like, ‘Man that looks crazy,’ ” he told us. “All those strip clubs and all those nightclubs and the drinks and the girls and the fame.”

Things have evolved in the months since he released Take Care. “Now I’m kind of in a very, very, very, very different place than I’ve ever been,” Drake said. “I think it will be conceptually one of the best projects that I’ve ever worked on because there’s so many new things going on in my life. Everybody knows when it’s new, that’s when I thrive.”

‘Raven’ Star John Cusack On Becoming Poe: There’s An App For That

It goes without saying that in order to achieve an impressive onscreen performance, an actor must enter into the mind, body, and environment of the character he or she is portraying. While fictionalized characters require imagination and innovation, historical figures depend on research and character study. And few historical individuals are more dark, complex and mysterious than Edgar Allan Poe.

MTV News recently spoke with veteran thespian John Cusack, who portrays the legendary poet and storyteller in the upcoming film “The Raven”, and asked what it takes to really enter into the world of such a puzzling man.

“It’s like an app, right? Like on your phone, ‘Go to Darkness.’ You press the Poe app,” Cusack joked.

“That’s sort of how the psyche works, too, in a way,” he clarified. “So, I think you just try to activate it and bring it to life.”

So, how did Cusack bring it to life? On top of reading Poe’s works and studied his biography, healso tried to tap into his emotions.

“If you think of movies like in a dream language, then there’s kind of a dream logic to it,” Cusack said. “And then you just follow the feelings. You use the feelings, I think that’s what it is.”

“The Raven” hits theaters April 27, so fans of Poe and his stories will soon discover how Cusack brings the horror-writer back to life.
